From the Adviser

Welcome to October and all the wonderful things it brings – the air gets crisp and the leaves turn amazing shades of red, orange and yellow (before we then have to rake them all!), and pumpkins and apple picking are in season and it all ends with Halloween and lots of fun for the kids...and too much candy!

We have had a great first month back but we still need your help – without growing the club and continued support and volunteers, the club won’t flourish and be able to do all of the amazing things to support our great town and foster community spirit and friendship.

We recognize time can be short but you get to choose what you want to be a part of! Do what you can and when you can! We welcome all and really want to make the club inclusive of all; young or old, families or singles, working parents, folks who have lived here for many years, or new people moving into our town and looking for a chance to meet new friends.

Currently we are sending the newsletter to active members, and those from the previous two years even if not active, to showcase some of the great things that are the same, and also changes and wonderful things we are working toward. We will continue this until the December newsletter and then only send it to the active members.

I truly hope there is something we offer that appeals to you and that you choose to become active members again if you are not – I know I would love that and would love to see Newcomers continue for many years to come. But we cannot do this without you and an engaged and supportive membership.

We will be hosting an Activities Fair/Welcome Gathering (DATE TO BE DETERMINED), and I would love to see so many people show up that we are over-crowded!

Thanks to Kathleen Bielak and Lisa Egnitz who have stepped up to lead our annual Thanksgiving Baskets project; this is one of the most important things we do to provide Thanksgiving Meals to those who use our Holliston Pantry Shelf, and I know the Pantry is thrilled we are continuing this effort. I also have told Melissa Beers this but wanted to give her a shout out here for running this the last few years and really streamlining and documenting the process so we can continue it.

Thanks also to Christel DiPippo and Erica Long for organizing our booth at Celebrate Holliston and setting it up so beautifully! We had a good amount of interest and sign-ups of a bunch of new members! Thanks also to those who staffed the booth as well!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth at Celebrate Holliston! It was great to see so many familiar faces and meet new people who are interested in joining the club. A special thanks goes out to Erica Long, Jessica Kerchner, Tracey Geden, Amanda Gibeau, Melissa Marien, Mirembe Reed and Beth Ng for helping me in manning the booth and with set-up and break down. We are also very grateful for John and Carol Paltrineri for generously donating a beautiful gift basket from Fiske’s General Store for our raffle to all members who have joined this year. Congratulations to Kim Adkin for winning that!

Please join me in extending a warm welcome to the following new members: Christina and Derek Darling, Kerri and Sean Mullen, Noelle and Michael Koker, Caitlin and Scott Lombardi, Kelly and Jarrod Dean, Stacey and Darren Balardini, Angela and Robert Page, Elizabeth and Andrew Swenson, Laura and Pat Sawicki, Chad Pierce (who just moved here 2 weeks ago!), and Savannah and Jacob Littman. Welcome to the club and if you are new to town welcome to Holliston!

We have had questions from residents who attended our June meeting and also at Celebrate Holliston who have been in Holliston for decades making sure they can join, and the answer to that is a resounding yes! Some are retirees who have time to give back to the community and want to help make a difference and others are looking to become more involved in civic and social engagements after work and whose kids are off to college. Please help spread the word to your friends and neighbors that you don’t have to be new to be a part of this club and there is no single demographic for members. We welcome everyone and hope to grow this organization even more this year to ensure that its legacy continues.

Food Pantry Update

The Annual Holliston Newcomers Club Back to School Food Drive took place on Saturday September 24th at the Shaw's in Ashland.  Many thanks to the Newcomers who volunteered their time: Margo, Gretchen, & Mirembe. This event was also made possible by Tracey, who was able to rally together the Girl Scouts. These young ladies were full of energy and positive attitudes. They were great at handing out the flyers and encouraging shoppers to donate to the Holliston Food Pantry! 

We were able to fill 20 banana boxes with food items and paper goods and collect $83.00 in cash!

Thank you again to all who participated and it was great that we were able to fill the Food Pantry van!

Thanksgiving Baskets

Greetings HNC! First off I would like to introduce myself: my name is Lisa Egnitz and I am new to the HNC. I have been in town for 5 years with my husband, Brian, and now our two boys, William (2) and Pierce (4mo). We plan to stay in Holliston to raise our children so what better way to start giving back to this wonderful community than to be a part of the Thanksgiving Baskets tradition! Kathleen Bielak and I will be working together to keep this project alive and look forward to everyone’s support to make it a success for the well deserving families in our town.

As the leaves begin to fall and the weather turns cold we look forward to another festive holiday season, but what would the holidays be without Thanksgiving dinner? Many deserving families in our town depend on the generous donations of fresh delicious items like their turkey, mashed potatoes, and - who could forget - the apple pie to complete their holiday meal. HNC makes this possible for them through the Thanksgiving Baskets we provide to the Holliston Food Pantry, and now that fall has arrived we are looking for your support. Last year we put together 170 baskets so that all of our Holliston families could enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving meal.

How can you help? This year we are looking for:

  • Volunteers to help with the food drive – Saturday, Nov. 5, from 8 am - 4 pm at the Shaw’s in Ashland.
  • Volunteers to help on basket packing day – Saturday, Nov. 19.  We start around 8 AM and finish up early afternoon.  

Another way to support our efforts is to please take a few minutes to log on to the HNC website and donate via PayPal. Donate to a family in need of a pie or fresh produce ($10), a turkey ($20), or even a full basket ($75); all donations large and small go a long way. Book Club

The year is off to a good start.  I hope everyone who attended our September meeting enjoyed the evening. We welcome new members to join us for a night of conversation. We always manage to spend some time discussing the book, but the evening is also a great chance to get to know a few new people in a small-relaxed setting.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 18th at 7:30pm and Karen Haynes has offered to host (address to be relayed in a reminder e-mail to those on our list. If you wish to be added or removed please send us an e-mail). We are reading The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom. A work of historical fiction, the novel follows the life of a young white orphan, Lavinia, after her arrival on a Virginia plantation prior to the Civil War.

Please bring a light snack or drink to share. In addition we are always looking for people to host upcoming meetings.  Our calendar includes both Tuesday and Thursday evenings to help provide more options. If you are interested in hosting please let us know.

In keeping with past tradition, we are also trying to schedule a movie night to see The Light Between Oceans starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander.  The novel by M.L. Stedman was one of the selections we read for book club last year. If you are interested in joining us for this event, please contact Christel or Kim. We will send an email and post the event on Facebook once plans are finalized.

Craft Fair

Fall is in the air, which means the 39th Annual Craft Fair is right around the corner! This year, the fair will take place on Sunday, November 20, from 9am - 3pm at the Holliston High School.

All HNC members are asked to volunteer for two hours, and there are several ways to help. We need people to place Craft Fair signs on lawns, set up the high school Saturday night, or volunteer at the fair on Sunday. We feed every volunteer well, no matter your shift!

In addition to volunteering two hours of your time, each family is asked to contribute two baked goods (e.g., two pies, two loaves of bread, two dozen cookies) to the always popular Bake Table. Details of where to drop off your baked items will be available in November's newsletter. 

We are very excited to have many new vendors to the fair this year! There will be an incredible assortment of handmade goods including knit pieces, custom clothing, beautiful jewelry, photography, artwork, and tasty treats! Our annual Craft Fair is the perfect way to kick off your holiday shopping season while supporting local small businesses.

Gingerbread House Decorating Event

Happy Fall to everyone!

Don’t forget to sign up for your seat at the Gingerbread House Decorating Event on Saturday, December 10th, 2016! Lisa and I are so excited to once again be co-chairing this event as we love it…it is as much fun for us as it is for all of the families and kids who get to come and create their beautiful – and yummy - Gingerbread Houses!

Once again we have the amazing Dee Steffen creating our Gingerbread fresh with all the ingredients, donated by Blue Ginger in Wellesley, Massachusetts where Dee is the Pastry Chef! They fully support Dee’s involvement and allow her to give her time and effort to us and we cannot thank them and her enough. We also have amazing help from our Girl Scout Troop #75346 as well as Maryann Brown who is our candy Queen every year! Lastly our event is held at the Mount Hollis Lodge, and folks there could not be kinder and more helpful every year!

Seatings available are 10-11 am, 11:30 am-12:30 pm, 1 pm-2 pm and 2:30 pm-3:30 pm and houses are $35.00 per house.

Please be sure to sign up for our Oktoberfest Event on Thursday, October 20th from 7 pm-10 pm at Jack's Abby Craft Lager in Framingham, MA. We need at least 25 people signed up to hold this event…we heard you wanted more fun and more chances to get to know more people so take advantage of this first social event and help make it a success! Hire a babysitter and bring your significant other and make it a date night while you are at it!

Sign up by October 6th! We will also be drawing the names of two lucky folks who get to take a small growler of your favorite beer home too!

There will be 2-3 beverages and food available and a LOT of fun!

Please join us for our annual Trick or Treating at Missions Springs on 10/27 from 3:30-4:30. The kids will be able to Trick or Treat in the lobby and then door to door followed by a snack and a craft. Mission Springs is located at 100 Summer Street. Santa Visits

Fall is about to arrive and the holidays will soon follow! We are very pleased to announce the Holliston Newcomers Club has made special arrangements with Santa to schedule a personal visit to your house (HNC members only, please). Santa usually has a very busy schedule, so please be certain to send in your request as soon as possible. Visits can be between 10 and 20 minutes. Santa will pose for pictures or even sing a holiday song. You may want to leave a present (optional), label attached, on your front step for Santa to bring inside. Dates in December and specified times will be made available as we arrive closer to the holiday. Visits will start after 5:30 pm.

The Holliston Newcomers Club is a not-for-profit organization that coordinates charitable, civic, educational, and recreational events and activities in the town of Holliston, MA. The organization’s goal is to encourage association among community members and foster community spirit. Membership is open to both residents and non-residents of Holliston.
