Something Special is Coming!

I am so excited to share with you a glimpse of an epic creative project that is in the works, involving many of my longstanding compositions and some new material that I am producing along with selected guest artists—several amazing musicians who are bringing my music to a whole new level of artistry. We’ll have a complete announcement with all the details soon, but for now, I wanted to let you know that something very special and soul-stirring will be coming your way, one jewel-like song at a time. I think of the songs in this collection as musical stories or sonic journeys, infused with a world beat and universal themes that evoke many different moods and emotions. Among the many wonderful talents who join me in this creative endeavor are: Harold Brown (drums and percussion); Brian Monroney (guitars); Dean Schmidt (bass); Darian Asplund (sax); Takamura Miyazaki (Sax); Andrew Cloutier (drums); Phil Pederson (strings); Randy Oxford (Trombone); Joe Doria (organ) and many others.
Watch this “creative corner” of the newsletter for more information about this project!

WOMEN AND HARPS GO WAY BACK!

March is Women’s History Month in the United States, a time when many national institutions commemorate important contributions that women have made to American history. We believe in celebrating women all year round and all over the world!

When it comes to female harmonica players, history tells us that women have been harping since the 1920’s in the United States, as well as other parts of the world, such as Europe and Asia. For example, harmonica playing is very popular among Asian females, who are taught to play from an early age (and they do so in a very elegant manner as Lee has observed).

Even with this history, many people may still mistakenly think of the harmonica as mainly a “man’s instrument,” which is yet another harmonica myth that needs busting— along with the old misconception that the harp is limited to playing blues and folk music. (Thanks to the Lee Oskar Harmonicas altered tunings, women and men can enjoy playing so many different musical genres!)

For a fun “blast from the past”, check out this charming harmonica routine featuring the harmonica stylings of Mildred Mulcay, who was one of the first professional female harmonicists in the US, along with her husband Jimmy.

We’ve come a long way since those days!  Today, we’re thrilled to showcase several unique female harmonica players as Lee Oskar Harmonicas Featured Artists, who represent a wide range of musical genres and styles.

Check out our LOH Featured Artists on our website to learn more about such talents (shown from left-right) as: Kellie Rucker, Carla Rossi, Michal Adler, Laura Reed, Stacy Jones, Ms. Harmonica and Sofie Reed and, yes, all the guys, too!
