This Weekend at First Lutheran

We are excited to finally get to welcome Pastor Dirk Stadtlander to join us in worship and preaching this weekend, July 17-18. Pastor Dirk serves the Free Indeed congregation at the Anamosa State Penitentiary, and was called to the position in March of 2020 just as the pandemic struck. This position is an outreach ministry of the Southeastern Iowa Synod of the ELCA, of which we are a part and support.

Prison Ministry Sunday Morning Learning

In Person & Online!
Come learn about prison ministry with Pr. Dirk Stadlander of Free Indeed,
an ELCA congregation that meets inside the walls of the Anamosa State Penitentiary. This event will be both in person in our chapel and live on Zoom at this link:

Scriptures: Psalm 107:1-3, 17-22; Ephesians 2:1-10 NRSV
Preaching: Pastor Dirk Stadtlander
Sermon: "Come Together: Freed by Christ"
In the second chapter of his letter to the Ephesians, Paul tells us we have been made alive in Christ and gives us a cornerstone verse in Lutheran theology (Ephesians 2:8-9), "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast."  We no longer have to earn our way to heaven or work to achieve our own salvation.  We have been set free by Jesus Christ.
Our Current Series:

Come Together Series ArtWe have been broken apart for close to a year and half due to a pandemic, and before that from construction. We have not seen some of the familiar faces in our church family for a long time. While God can cover any distance to connect us to each other, we may have emotionally drifted away, been left feeling isolated, or feeling a strain on our faith and our willingness to believe.

The Apostle Paul wrote his letter to the Ephesians for the discouraged that we are no longer strangers but fellow citizens with God’s people. This summer we will preach through the entire letter as we come together once again in person or in Spirit to discover at “how high and deep is the love of Christ” (Eph. 3:18) for all of us collectively as we journey together through the grand scheme of the gospel.   Join with us this summer as we are Come Together in Christ.

Coming Soon

This Week – Inside & Up Close with our Organ!

Are you curious about the new organ — to get an up-close look at what you see or what you don’t see behind the façade pipes? Brett Wolgast is providing opportunities for a tour of our new instrument (an Organ Crawl – using organology).

Tours will start in the church balcony and then proceed to inside the organ chambers for a behind-the-scenes look.  Each tour block of time will accommodate up to eight people with 2- 3 persons at a time inside the chambers.  (Note: climbing angled steps is required for those wishing to view the 2nd and 3rd stories of the instrument).”

August 3 – FLC Night at the Kernels

Join us for Thrivent Night at the Ballpark at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 3. The Cedar Rapids Kernels will take on the Quad Cities River Bandits and honor our local Special Olympians.

Tickets are $10 each, a savings of $3 off the regular price thanks to our ministry partners at Thrivent Financial.  We purchased a block of 50 tickets together. Please make checks out to "First Lutheran Church" and put "Kernels" on the memo line.  Reserve your spot today on our website.
