Executive Director Arron Mansika Steps Down from Naturally Boulder

Arron Mansika stepped down as the Executive Director of Naturally Boulder at the end of December. He will serve in a limited capacity as he works with our Executive Committee during the transition to new leadership. Arron, who was appointed as the organization's first Executive Director in 2016, worked alongside Naturally Boulder's founders since 2006. Before his Executive Director role, he served Naturally Boulder as a board member, Director of Operations and Managing Director. Arron has been an integral contributor to our community's growth and evolution, and we wish him great success in his next endeavors. Our Board of Directors has begun a search for a successor to lead the organization into its next chapter.

Danone North America Expands Regenerative Agriculture Program
Leads the most comprehensive regenerative agriculture dairy program in the US

Broomfield-based Danone North America continues to expand its regenerative farming program which is currently the most comprehensive regenerative agriculture dairy program in the US. The goal of Danone’s soil health initiative is to improve organic matter in soils leading to increased carbon sequestration and improved yields, reduced chemical use, restored biodiversity, and enhanced soil water holding capacity, resulting in improved farm economic resilience over the long term. Now completing its third year, the research program has nearly tripled to more than 82,000 acres, inclusive of 28,000 organic acres, across the US and Canada, and has recently expanded into almond orchards in the central valley of California.

ZEST Brands Sells to Steven Robert Original Desserts
Cofounders Sylvia Wyant and Ken Hess started ZEST ten years ago

Boulder-based ZEST Brands, makers of gourmet almond flour baked goods, has been purchased by Steven Robert Original Desserts (SRO). ZEST cofounders Sylvia Wyant and Ken Hess started the bakery ten years ago and their Paleo and GF and vegan cakes and cookies have been a preferred line of gluten-free offerings at Whole Foods Markets since 2011. Founded in 1995, Aurora-based SRO is a privately held manufacturer of custom desserts for America's favorite restaurants employing over 1,000 people. ZEST will be a welcome addition to the company’s national retail division which includes a premium line of novelty cake bars and many other treats under their Ticklebelly brand.

Boulder-based Shine brews its Potions with adaptogenic herbs and botanicals, then infuses the product with energetic vibrations of sound frequencies, gem essences and flower essences. The Potions, Fairy Bubbles, Owl Eyes, and the Awakening, have been re-released in cans with QR codes so drinkers can hear the sound frequencies while enjoying the beverages.

Vukoo Nutrition Releases Patented Pack Design and New Flavors
Company wins 2020 Excellence Award from Paperboard Packaging Council

Vukoo Nutrition
Aspen-based Vukoo Nutrition released new flavors of their refrigerated Farm To Bar protein bars and won the 2020 Excellence Award in the Paperboard Packaging Council’s Innovative Packaging Competition. Vukoo’s goal was to create a design that increases sales with fewer in-store demos.

Meati Foods Sees Massive Potential for "Steak Alternative" Made From Mycelium
Meati's products expected to debut in stores by the second half of 2021

Meati Foods
Boulder-based Meati Foods' CEO and co-founder Tyler Huggins likens the company's brand-new facility in Boulder to a brewpub. But instead of fermenting beer, Meati grows mycelium in a specially-modified tank. The final outcome is Meati's recently-developed steak product: a three-ounce serving contains 17 grams of protein, no cholesterol, only one gram of non-added sugar, and high amounts of niacin, riboflavin, B12, and zinc. Meati is currently available on an introductory basis in Boulder; the company expects its products to debut in stores by the second half of 2021.

Golden-based Spinster Sisters recently earned the grand prize at Kickfurther's 2020 Growth Giveaway Pitch Contest. Spinster Sisters founder and CEO, Kelly Perkins, was one of over 200 entrepreneurs who applied. The prize includes no cost inventory funding along with multiple value awards from Kickfurther’s strategic partners including RangeMe.

Appleooz Supports Zero-Waste Grocery Stores During Pandemic
Crunchy apple chips sold in bulk with no-waste packaging

Appleooz
Boulder-based Appleooz re-launched during the pandemic, which required creativity and imagination. The CPG company decided to sell its crunchy apple chips in bulk without plastic packaging to zero waste grocery stores to reduce pollution from discarded bags. Appleooz are now being sold at three zero waste grocery stores/delivery services in Boulder, Longmont and Denver and is looking to expand regionally.

So says the white paper from a high-level working group of more than 80 experts across CPG titled, “Uncovering the Next Innovation Curve in Sustainable Packaging.” The white paper offers a playbook on the transition away from plastic flexible films, a rapidly growing packaging format with no end-of-life option. The white paper, a result of a collaborative event produced by Boulder-based RCD Packaging Innovation, addresses:

Denver Now Accepting Applications to Serve on the Sustainability Advisory Council
Help guide the implementation of Denver’s climate change-focused policies and programs

The public is invited to apply to join one of the six standing committees of the Sustainability Advisory Council which work with staff liaisons to advise the Office of Climate Action, Sustainability, and Resiliency (CASR): (1) Science and Research, (2) Climate Equity and Environmental Justice, (3) Buildings and Homes, (4) Energy, (5) Resource Management, and (6) Sustainable Transportation. The committee co-chairs will serve as voting members of the SAC, along with two at-large members and one member from Denver City Council. Applications are due by Friday, January 15, 2021 at 5PM.
