Conagra Acquires Pinnacle Foods for $10.9 Billion

Pinnacle’s portfolio includes Boulder Brands' EVOL, Udi’s, Glutino, Earth Balance, Gardein
Conagra Brands announced that it will acquire Pinnacle Foods for $10.9 billion in cash and stock. The merger of Conagra and Pinnacle makes the duo the second-largest U.S. frozen food company behind Nestle. Pinnacle acquired Boulder Brands for roughly $975 million in 2016.  The deal is expected to close before the end of 2018.

Dean Foods Acquires Majority Share of Good Karma

Good Karma to continue operating in Boulder
Boulder-based Good Karma announced an increased partnership with Dean Foods. Dean Foods has increased its ownership percentage and taken a majority stake in the flax-based dairy brand. The company previously acquired a minority share of the Good Karma brand in May 2017. Good Karma will continue to operate from its Boulder headquarters as an independent company led by its current leadership team.

GoodBelly Lands $12 Million Round

Investment led by 301 Inc.
Boulder-based NextFoods Inc, the producer of GoodBelly Probiotics, announced the close of a $12 million round of funding led by 301 Inc, the venture arm of General Mills. Goodbelly’s portfolio has long been heavily weighted toward shots and juice drinks, but a collaboration between General Mills and GoodBelly on a line of probiotic-infused granola bars provided the spark that eventually led to the investment. The result was a licensing agreement for General Mills to produce and sell a line of bars under the GoodBelly name. The bars officially launched at Natural Products Expo East in 2017 and began rolling into retail this year.

SPINS Partners With C.A. Fortune

Partnership fuels expanded connectivity with data-driven insights
Chicago-based SPINS announced a new partnership with C.A. Fortune Sales & Marketing to provide further support and connectivity for retailers and manufacturers. The new partnership equips retailers and shared manufacturer clients with insight and a common language on which to build stronger collaboration with key retail partners.  

Crunchsters is Raising Capital

Sprouted mung bean brand looks to go mainstream
Boulder-based Crunchsters, formerly known as Highlight Foods Inc., is raising $2.8 million in an equity offering. Those funds will be used to expand the company’s product line to the Eastern U.S., as well as expansion into mainstream grocery and convenience stores. The funds will also assist in hiring marketing and logistics specialists.

Justin’s Releases Almond and Cashew Butter Cups

New line available this month
Boulder-based Justin’s announced the roll out of a new line of confections: Dark Chocolate Almond Butter Cups and Dark Chocolate Cashew Butter Cups. The USDA-certified organic nut butter cups will be popping up on shelves starting this month. Justin’s also added Organic Mini White Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups to its lineup earlier this year rounding out the peanut butter cup product line. 

Wildmade Introduces a New Line of Organic Fruit Rolls for Whole Foods Market

From the makers of Veggie-Go’s
Boulder-based Veggie-Go’s partnered with Whole Foods Market to launch a new line of Organic Fruit Rolls.  Wildmade Fruit Rolls launched with three flavors including Grape, Tropical Fruit and Fruit Punch.  Each Fruit Roll has a half serving of fruit per roll with no added sugar and is also USDA Organic.

Doctor D’s Hits National Distribution

Company expands distribution with Publix
Louisville-based Doctor D’s Sparkling Probiotic announced that a new round of funding has resulted in gaining national distribution. Partnerships with UNFI, KeHE, DPI Specialty foods, and Certco have brought Doctor D’s distribution list to approximately 2,000 retailers across the country, including Publix, King Soopers, Whole Foods Markets, Sprouts, Natural Grocers, Earth Fare, Lassen’s, and Woodman’s.

UnCanny Wellness Single-Serve CBD Drinks Goes National

Lucky's Market expands company’s distribution
Boulder-based UnCanny Wellness is bringing it’s single-serve packet herbal drink blends to Lucky’s Market nationwide. These functionally-specific powdered blends will be available nationally and are an expansion to UnCanny's line of CBD products already on the shelf including capsules and full 30-serving tubs of the blends. 

Rooster & Lark Launches in Earth Fare Markets and Woodman’s Markets

Company further expands presence in Southeast and Midwest
Denver-based Rooster & Lark has continued its growth with full placements in Earth Fare Markets and Woodman’s Markets. These new placements bring their total store count to 350 doors across 34 states. Rooster & Lark breakfast skillets contain all the vegetables for an omelette or scramble, pre-seasoned, and flash frozen.

Look Out Here I Come Increases Distribution

Company to launch statewide through Safeway in 2019
Boulder-based Look Out Here I Come recently expanded distribution from 1 Safeway in Boulder, to 57 Safeway’s throughout Colorado and Wyoming. Look Out Here I Come will be launching statewide with Safeway in 2019. The garlic infused olive oil brand is also in Alfalfa’s and McGuckins.

'Best for the World' Companies

Organic India USA and New Resource Bank receive B Lab top honors
Boulder-based Organic India USA and San Francisco-based New Resource Bank achieved the 'Best for the World Overall’ title from B Lab. 'Best for the World' honors B Corp businesses that earned an overall score in the top 10% of more than 2,400 Certified B Corporations, a rigorous and comprehensive assessment of a company's impact on its workers, community, and the environment. This is Organic India’s first 'Best for the World' award while New Resource has received this honor seven years in a row.

Naturally Boulder’s 2018 service projects with Metro Caring are off to a great start and we are looking for some more help throughout this summer. This is a great opportunity for team-building and collaboration, as you’ll work together to complete tasks and work toward a common goal. You will be building community among colleagues, while simultaneously serving your community. Naturally Boulder's Spring Fling was Far Out!
Nearly 700 industry professionals gathered to celebrate the industry

Last month, nearly 700 natural products professionals celebrated the industry at Naturally Boulder’s 14th annual Spring Fling.  And it was groovy, baby.  Many attendees sported throwback 60’s threads (when the industry really got going) and the crowd sampled products from 18 young companies that are carrying the torch into the 21st Century.  We thank all who attended, our volunteers, and our event organizers!  Check out fun photos here and here
