President’s Letter

With our 41st Annual Judged Exhibiting coming up I did some research on the values of why artists should enter art competitions and found the following information to be very inspiring:

Art competitions (as our Judged Exhibit) represent an excellent opportunity to grow as an artist. Entering a competition requires time and thought. It’s a reflection that helps artists identify, establish, and unify artistic concepts. It takes you a step back, allowing you to see beyond individual images and forces you to consider your work as a whole. It shows you how you’ve developed as time passes and how you are improving.

Obviously, winning breeds confidence. But putting yourself in a position where someone is judging your work takes courage and is a statement of confidence in your creations and even in yourself as an artist. It’s a powerful way to inspire yourself to continuously try and improve. Whether it’s your first time or your hundredth anyone who simply enters the competition is a  winner.

The important thing about entering art competitions is not to focus on what you didn’t get, but to appreciate the value of what you did achieve. Just because your artwork was not selected does not mean it is not good or that you are not talented.

Remember to:
Learn, Laugh and become Inspired.

                                             Happy Painting!
                                                                                    Jan Dalton

February Demonstration  Pastels with Tammy Papa

With a painterly and impressionistic style, Tammy Papa captures beautiful low country scenes, from the marshes and beaches near her Isle of Palms home, to  architecture , still life and figure.  After majoring in studio art at the University of South Carolina, Tammy was an art director, where she created distinguished designs for clients such as Spoleto Festival USA, The Gibbes Museum of Art, and the Charleston Place Hotel.  In 1996, Tammy devoted herself to painting full-time, specializing in oils and pastels. A highlight of each year is participating in the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition, where her work received first and second place honors in 2005 and 2006. She enjoys sharing her talents through teaching drawing, watercolor and pastel workshops.  “I am drawn into the beauty before me,” says Tammy. “I consider myself an expressive colorist, drawn to color and dramatic light. I see paintings everywhere I look, all day long. My easel, my art, is a refuge from the hectic pace of life. I can totally immerse myself in my painting, and have the good fortune of being able to do what I love to do in such a beautiful and inspiring place.”

All Hands Needed As

Summerville ROCKS! The Arts:

Paint the town of Summerville; support a plein air artist; donate to the silent auction; help make our Guild the Talk of the Town!
The Guild’s Summerville ROCKS! Committee has been enlisting artists willing to paint en plein air on Friday & Saturday, March 10 & 11 (rain date, March 24-25). Those artists will have until January 31 to identify the place they would like to set up to paint, be it in Azalea Park, on Short Central, at Colonial Dorchester, or wherever. The Committee will make sure the artists have a town permit or private property owners’ permission for those locations.
On the Friday in question, artists will check in from 8 AM to 9 AM at Art Central to have their canvas or paper stamped. At that time, artists can already have a sketch of their chosen subject done, but painting should be done in public.  Everyone should be set up by 10 AM, allowing them to paint as late as 4 PM.  Artists will be able to pass out flyers, business cards, and have photos of their work at their stations. They cannot, however, legally set up works to sell. They will be able to have additional paper or canvases stamped on Saturday morning.  The committee will need all Guild members to step up to help allow the artists to take breaks and eat lunch.
On the Saturday, we hope everyone will join us on the grounds of First Citizens Bank for the live auction of our artists’ works.  A silent auction of donated items will accompany the live auction. Tickets for the event will be $25 and will include an elegant champagne bar and hors d’oeuvres.
Some of last year’s S ROCKS! sponsors want to paint another rocker as a donation to the silent auction. We hope to have those sponsors identified by February 8.  We hope local business – and Guild Members – will donate to the silent auction, as well. Those items need to be collected by February 27, allowing time for the auction program to be finalized.
Please contact committee chairman Diana Barth at  or Committee member Renee Bruce at if you have a silent auction donation, would like to paint en plein air, have a suggestion for event sponsors, or would like to volunteer to help during the event days.
The Committee meets Mondays at 5 PM at Art Central Art Gallery, when silent auction items will be collected.

The Figure Drawing Group
The SAG Figure Drawing group is meeting monthly at the Stallsville Methodist Church in Room 111. On January 17, 2017 the session will be held on Tuesday from 9am-12 noon. As we are a newly organizing group, the day of the week may change in the future depending upon space availability. There will be Eblast notifications.
The group draws quick gestures then shorter and longer poses from direct perception viewing the model. Experimenting with a variety of drawing media, we build basic skills rendering the human form without instruction but lots of encouragement.
All interested members and others are encouraged to join us.
There is a $10. model fee.
