WALK & ROLL-A-THON SUCCESS!
|
|
The Walk & Roll-a-Thon is a longstanding tradition at GLES, and is beloved by students and staff alike. This year 436 kids ran 6178 laps, which translates to 1544 MILES. To put that in perspective, that’s roughly the distance between San Diego, California to Vancouver, BC!
This fundraiser is unique not only because of the number of parent volunteers (we had 60 this year!), but also because this is the only fundraiser where the kids are raising money for themselves.
While other fundraisers, like the tree sale, are run by families where kids may choose to participate, the success of the Walk & Roll-a-Thon falls entirely on the small but mighty shoulders of our students. It’s a unique opportunity for them to participate in a community building activity where they directly benefit from their actions. A portion of funds raised from the Walk & Roll-a-Thon goes towards providing school wide transportation to field trips.
This year the Kindergarten class raised the most money, and Ms. Rose’s 5thgrade class ran the most laps (465!), allowing them the distinct honor of choosing which staff member got a pie in the face. Hats off to the 11 staff members who volunteered to be pied, and a special nod to Mr. Salcedo who ended up being selected.

BUILDING A STRONGER COMMUNITY
Our GLES PTA Social Justice & Equity Committee is committed to getting the word out about how we can use our strength in numbers, our powerful voices & our economic stability to build community both at GLES and beyond. Last year we helped organize and distribute over a thousand diapers into Wallingford and adjacent communities! We have committed fundraising efforts to help our South End school partnership with Rising Star (formerly Van Asselt Elementary) grow AND we have partnered with our fellow North End schools to bring presentations to our parents and students (like Kids and Race, Sharon Chang and more) to really use our resources for this good work. We even started a book club! We do all of this because we strongly believe that everyone deserves to be heard, seen and respected.
Come join us in this great work and show our kids what it means to be a great citizen of the world!
