Sing up to help water this summer here.

Seeking Garden Coordinator Help - We are also looking for interested people to help with the garden coordinator role. Building a Stronger Community

Green Lake - Van Asselt Community Celebration
The SJ&E Committee would like to send a big shout out of gratitude to all of the families that attended our first GLES / Van Asselt Joint Event - what a fantastic way to celebrate our first year of partnership! Special thanks to Gwyn Hainsworth, who led the charge in connection with Grace at VAES - to make this great day happen.

Looking Forward
For those of you interested in continuing the work of the SJ&E mission - or wish to jump in for the first time - we welcome you to attend our summer get together - there will be refreshments, friends, great conversation & planning for the upcoming school year. August 3rd, 4p - 8p. Contact equity@greenlakedragons.org with questions or to be added to the invite list.

Food Assistance Needed for GLES Families
GLES is looking for a few good folks to provide a few great families needing food assistance during the summer months - please drop off grocery gift cards to Jennifer in the front office - Fred Meyers, Safeway and QFC are preferred. Thank you for supporting your community!!

From the PTA President

We’re almost to the finish line! A head-spinning amount of activities occurred in the last several weeks, but I think we’ve just about wrapped up the long list of GLES events for the year. I wanted to thank every single parent at our school because A) getting kids awake, fed, and on time to school is HARD and B) GLES would be soulless without the warm community of parents we’ve been lucky to have. This is my tenth year as a parent at GLES and while the school has changed and families have moved on, the welcoming, friendly environment endures. So thank you!

I also wanted to thank the kind, funny, devoted PTA board members that have made so many things possible this year. Most especially, I am grateful for my co-president, Amy Knobbs. Organizing all that happens at GLES is super fun and also lots of work! Sharing the load with her was a delight. Amy is tireless and devoted to GLES – and you lucky parents get to have her again next year as your 2nd year president!

We are very lucky to have three successful fundraisers serving us well year after year. Thank you to our hardworking, but always smiling committee chairs!

  •  Kai Kunkel & Andrea Bernasconi coordinated the Walk and Rollathon where the kids raised more than $24,000.
  • Jeff Winter, Doug Hungarter, and Alisa McMullen facilitated the tree sale which brought in almost $35,000.
  • Christina Smits & Sara Woods led the auction committee and WOW!! This incredible event raised more than $135,000 to help power the GLES student community.
There is a very long list of volunteers who oversee the many other programs and events supported by PTA funds. STEM night, Literacy night, Young Author’s Day, school assemblies, library books, staff appreciation, family support funds, garden maintenance, bike to school month, the Dragon Tutor program, school directories, yearbooks, after school enrichment classes, kindergarten breakfast, incoming family ice cream socials – these and many more are diligently planned and executed by PTA volunteers.

Other PTA-funded activities this year included the following:
  • The swim program – all K-3 students enjoyed swim lessons at the Green Lake community center
  • Vocal music – the PTA supported additional instruction so that all students enjoyed this learning opportunity
  • Instrumental music – the PTA funded this program for 4th graders (the district paid for 5th graders)
  • Islandwood – the PTA subsidized this amazing week of camp for all 4th graders

Our Facilities Chair Tracy Henderson invested a ton of time this year developing our Playground Renovation project - which is a marathon! We have a big year ahead of us to fundraise and build relationships in the community so we can move this project to the next phase, but we finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

We also have exciting things happening with our Social Justice and Equity committees who are combining forces next year as the SJ&E committee. In addition to a substantial SJ&E activities budget, we’ve established a unique equity share program that designates 3% of our fundraising income to be shared among PTAs. Currently, we are developing a relationship with Van Asselt Elementary and learning so much. As we figure out the best way to grow together, we hope our model of sharing will catch on with other PTAs in the area. There is a lot of positive buzz!

Lastly, a shout out to Alisa McMullen who just wrapped up her 6th year on the GLES PTA board. Nothing happens without volunteers and she is the one who wrangles them all. THANK YOU, ALISA!!

Enjoy the summer, everybody! And thanks again for a great year at GLES.

Lindsey Winter
GLES PTA Co-President
