Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

Staff Appreciation Week; May 6th - 10th
 
We have several options for participating this year:
  • TACO BAR Wed., 5/8, Signup can be found here.
  • Misc. food items (breakfast treats on Fri., 5/10, La Croix to stock their fridge as well as desserts throughout the week) Signup can be found here.
  • Warm words of gratitude with either specific or general expressions of gratitude for the staff at Green Lake can be emailed to staffappreciation@greenlakedragons.org.  These words, either your own, or those of your children, will be compiled and presented to the staff.

Olallie Garden Needs You!!!!

The school garden is a great way to get involved and there are all sorts of ways you can help. Spring planning for the garden is here! Here is how you can help:
  • Helping teachers in the garden now:
    • Teachers can sign up now for garden space or to start seeds in the classroom
    • You can help teachers plant with students
  • Help at the volunteer days

  • Saturday, 4/27 from 11am - 3pm
  • Saturday, 5/18 from 11am - 3pm
  • Saturday, 6/8 from 11am - 3pm
  • TBD - a few ad hoc gardening opportunities

Building a Stronger Community

Green Lake Gathering & Potluck for Families of Color

Green Lake families of color are invited to a gathering on Friday April 19th, from 6:30-8:30 pm in the school cafeteria. We hope this gathering will provide an opportunity to build community & engage in meaningful conversation. Please RSVP and sign up for bringing a dish to share here. 

A family of color includes families in which any member identifies as a person of color. A person of color is a term that describes people whose heritage is from underrepresented racial & ethnic communities in the U.S. and covers any peoples who identify as African/Black, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian, Latinx/Hispanic, South Asian, Middle Eastern, Pacific Islander, multiracial, or mixed race. Lots of Diapers Needed for GLES Diaper Drive - ends April 20th!

Help GLES reach our goal of providing FamilyWorks with 2 months of diapers & wipes for families in need in our community. Thank you to those who have dropped off diapers & wipes at school & donated online. We STILL NEED over 2,500 diapers & 30 packages of wipes.

Donate funds here via FamilyWorks website with "GLES Diaper Drive" in the 'honor of' box 


Donate diapers & wipes - highest need: pull-ups of all sizes, size 5 & 6. A donation box is inside the front door of the school until 4/19. Diapers & wipes can also be dropped off at FamilyWorks on 4/20. More info: 


Playground Benefit Concert

Come listen to live music & hang out with the Green Lake community to help raise money for our playground fund. The master plan is complete, now it is time to build the fund to get phase 1 going! All ages welcome! Questions can be directed to John Leahy.
 
Music by Some Who Ain’t (the resident teacher band at Green Lake Elementary)
When: Friday April 26th, Doors open at 7:00, music starts at 8:00, end around 10:00
Where: Eagles Hall Aerie No. 1 (8201 Lake City Way NE, Seattle WA 98115)
Suggested donation: $10.00-$20.00 (or anything you want to donate!)


Can't make the concert but would like to contribute to the cause? Cash donations can be processed via PayPal, here.


PTA Happy Hour & Recruitment

Save the Date! The current PTA will be hosting a Happy Hour on Thursday, May 2nd from 7:30 - 9pm, to let you learn about the various roles to be filled next year. We invite anyone that might be interested to please join us for a fun evening of light appetizers and adult beverages to learn more. Please keep an eye out for further details in the near future.


2019 Auction

Thank you to everyone who attended or supported our 2019 Auction. We’re thrilled to report that this year’s event net over $120K! Because of you, our entire school community will continue to benefit from extra support staff, special programs and assemblies, teacher accounts, swimming, and the many other ways big and small our incredible PTA is able to support our school.


After School Enrichment

Registration for Enrichment Classes Started on 4/15, classes start week of 4/22. It is on a first come first served basis. Sign up and view class details at www.6crickets.com

Please pick up your child in their enrichment classroom.

 
*School Play, Stage Design, Ultimate, and Girls on the Run are ongoing and will meet during the week of 4/15.


Legislative

We still need to Fully Fund Education, please Contact Your Legislators. 

Contact your legislators and ask them to fully fund education and restore local levy flexibility in Washington State!  Click here for more information including an example email and how to locate your legislators.  All you need to do is copy, paste and hit 'send'!


May is Bike Month

Friday - May 4th: Bike Safety Assembly presented by Cascade Bicycle Club during morning assembly.

Wednesday May 9th: Bike To School Day Greeting table with stickers, swag & cycling / safety information in the morning before school bell.
 
Bike to School Challenge. Students keep track of how many minutes they spend bicycling during the month of May. All cycling counts, not just rides to/from school.  Cascade Bicycle Club will be giving out prizes for the school with the most minutes & the highest participation.  In addition there will be prizes for the student cyclists with the most minutes & classrooms in each grade with the highest participation rate. Tracking Calendars will be sent home with students the last week in April, or you can print your own BIKE CHALLENGE CALENDAR.

Sports & Summer Camp Opportunities

GLSA Summer Programs

STILL LOOKING FOR FUN FULL DAY SUMMER CAMPS FOR YOUR KIDS? GLSA has nine theme weeks planned including field trips, optional swimming on Mondays & Fridays, flexible sign ups and the camp is open from 6:30am to 6:00pm Monday through Friday.  Check out the 2019 Summer Brochure, here.


University of Washington Summer Camp
 
The University of Washington Summer Youth Program has opened up enrollment for two session of its elementary day camps.  Program runs two-week thematic sessions, 9am-4pm.  Students participate in Arts and STEM-related activities each day.  For exact dates and details visit: www.summer-camp.uw.edu.  Space is limited!
Seattle Celtic Soccer Club

Fall Season Registration is now open. Fall season tryouts are from April 15 - May 9. Celtic have teams at all levels for players born between 2001 and 2013 & a coaching staff with the perfect mix of energy, passion and expertise to help players develop and excel in a fun environment. Need based scholarships are also available! Pedalheads
