Great news, the playground structure is being redone this summer!
Thanks to a levy funded by Seattle Public Schools, our much loved, but rapidly deteriorating, current playground structure will be replaced by something fun, safe, and exciting.
What exactly will this look like?
Precise plans are still in the works, and some of the details won’t be clear until it’s underway, but we do know it’s happening this summer, which is a huge step in the right direction.
Do we get a say in anything?
While the actual playground structure falls under the jurisdiction of Seattle Public Schools, we’ve set our sights on the underutilized areas of our playspace, like the hillsides and terraced areas above the playground. Although plans have yet to be finalized, additions like an ADA accessible ramp, and slides down the hill are in the process of being approved and funded by grants and parent donations.
What can we do to help?
The generosity of our GLES families over the last three years has been incredible while we've raised funds to make this happen. The countless volunteer hours donated, as well as the financial component are an awesome testament to our wonderful community. But, as you can imagine, a project of this magnitude comes at a significant cost.
What SPS provides this summer will be a wonderful and much needed update, but it will still fall short of creating a safe, inclusive and accessible active space that all of our students can enjoy. We still need help ensuring this project will match the vivacity, enthusiasm, and abilities of every single one of our GLES kids.
