Tip of the Month

The average Emergency Physician will see between 20 – 30 patients per shift. Over a period of a few hours, this represents a considerable amount of multi-tasking and it is easy to reduce encounters to generic numbers, figures and names within your expansive workload. However, for most patients, a visit to the ED represents a significant life event, often with attached emotional distress surrounding the complaint that brought them in. Hence, it is important for ED Physicians to practice empathy in all encounters with patients. Imagine being in their situation and project the personality you would like to receive if the positions were reversed. Be kind, humble and never forget that no matter how many patients we see, each one of them is in fact a person seeking your help.
