HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM PCOH!

As we enter 2019, PCOH is making plans to expand our advocacy efforts for improved oral health policy, not only in Harrisburg, but across the state. We will be working hard on priority issues including:
  • Community water fluoridation advocacy with individuals and organizations who have the most influence on community decisions, including regulatory agencies, township supervisors/boards, and water operators/authorities
  • Increased dental benefits for adults who are enrolled in Medical Assistance, through administrative advocacy and work with managed care organizations
  • Expansion of school-based health options with a focus on the expansion of current programs which offer screening and preventive services like sealants
We hope you will join us and support this work throughout the year. It can't be done without you!

DENTAL BENEFIT IN MEDICARE BILL INTRODUCED

On January 4, Senator Ben Cardin from Maryland introduced S.22, the Medicare Dental Benefit Act of 2019 - a bill that, if enacted, would allow older adults and persons with disabilities to access their oral healthcare as they do their medical care - through Medicare.

PCOH will follow this legislation very closely and keep you
posted on support needed.

NEW RURAL SENIOR HEALTH RESOURCE AVAILABLE

Oral health matters for seniors in rural America. A few weeks ago, Families USA and the National Rural Health Association co-released a new factsheet, For Rural Seniors, Improving Overall Health Requires Improving Oral Health Care. This product explains the barriers rural seniors face to achieving oral health and the solutions policy makers can take to address them.

In rural areas, nearly one-fifth of residents are 65 and over. This population faces many obstacles that keep them from oral health care, including cost, lack of dental coverage, and limited access to providers. Without policy solutions to address these barriers, rural seniors' overall health is worse off, and our health care system is paying the price. You can use this factsheet to explain these issues to your own networks, policymakers, and the public.

CALIFORNIA MAKES STRIDES ON MEDICAID WORK

California has recently launched new programs aimed at expanding their number of dentists participating in Medical Assistance. This story will be an interesting one to follow as many of the ideas could be incorporated in Pennsylvania as well.
