In this edition of Container News, we will be discussing the factors that has impacted the price of a shipping container. We caught up with the team of a previous bespoke container conversion we did in 2015. We also have a new section on one of our websites to help our customers design their bespoke conversion with downloadable content to aid in this process. We will also be discussing how at this time of the year we see an increase in the number of customers across our UHTK Self-Storage sites.

We welcome your feedback and any suggestions for future content. If you would like to share your thoughts, please drop a line to or call 01740 629999.
Kind regards,
Ean Parsons and the team.

  • Shipping Containers Price Spike

Shipping Containers Price Spike
Shipping containers have been slowly increasing in price over the last few months, due to a number of factors. We have seen the box price (price of a shipping container) increase by 25% since this time last year. All container traders are experiencing the challenges that this presents, however, we will always try and stay competitive in the market and provide the best possible prices to customers.

The main reason for the price increase is partly due to a drop in the exchange rate, which has resulted in a higher purchasing price for suppliers. Another factor – which we flagged up in our last newsletter- is the new paint specification that came into effect on the 1st April, a change from solvent based to waterborne paint, to reduce emissions throughout China. China produces up to 95% of the world’s shipping containers, so this news will have an impact everywhere. The waterborne coatings have been extensively tested to ensure that they deliver the same standard and level of durability as traditional paint. There is also a shortage of shipping containers at the moment, with the depots throughout China resulting in a backlog of orders. This puts a larger lead-time for new arrivals of new ‘one trip’ shipping containers coming to the UK.

We will continue to monitor developments and work to minimise any potential impact on supply or price.

  • High Demand for storage at Bishop Auckland and Middlesbrough

High Demand for storage at Bishop Auckland and Middlesbrough
It’s the time of year when the warmer weather motivates us to clearing out the garage, moving house or just trying to be a bit more organised over the summer.

We’ve seen an increase in the number of containers hired over the last few weeks on all our sites but there has been particularly high demand at Bishop Auckland and Middlesbrough with both sites almost fully occupied.

We’ve added some smaller stores to our site at Bishop Auckland but if we don’t have the size you’re looking for on that site we have another site close by at Mainsforth, Ferryhill where we have all sizes available.  Please follow our link for more information here.

At Middlesbrough we’ve added some of our larger stores to site (20ft x 8ft) to try to meet demand.  This is our most popular size and would usually be large enough for a 3 bedroomed house move.  All our containers are on ground level and you can drive right up to your store so you don’t have to carry items further than necessary.  The double doors on the larger stores also makes access really easy for your larger furniture.

Again if we don’t have the size of stores at Middlesbrough that you’re looking for, our sites and Stockton or Sadberge near Darlington have more stores available.

Mobile Catering Conversion - Case Study
Back in 2015 we converted 1no. 10ft shipping container into a bespoke mobile catering unit for a well-established food company based in the North East. Fast forward to 2017 and we caught up with the team there to discuss the impact that the shipping container conversion has had. Our case study looks at the process, including the answers we received two years on.

Custom shipping container conversion website page
We have recently added a new page to our website. This has been added for customers looking to get a shipping container conversion. We have created spec drawings for a 10ft shipping container, 20ft shipping container and 40ft shipping container; the most common conversion sizes we get asked for. The downloadable content are the side, front, rear and plan elevations for you to print and design your own shipping container concept. Once you have your design you can email that back to us and we can start the process of making your concept a reality.

All shipping container conversions come from a need, that develop into an idea when you put that idea onto paper, the concept starts to take shape.

If you are looking to get a shipping container converted, follow the link to download our external and internal plans to help you draw up your conversion here.

Parsons Group News
Welcome to our latest apprentice
If you have visited any of our U Hold The Key sites recently you may have already bumped into the newest member of our team. Christopher Waller has joined the Parsons Group as site maintenance apprentice, working across our nine North East self-storage sites. Christopher is the third apprentice in our team at the moment. He joins Morgan Rouse and Phoebe Coates, who have begun business administration apprenticeships at our Sedgefield headquarters.  We have a long tradition of using apprenticeships to recruit and train staff, that goes back 14 years.  Container sales manager Stephen Collins and operations manager Dean Tempest both joined us as apprentices, in 2003 and 2007 respectively. We’re delighted to welcome Christopher, Morgan and Phoebe, and hope that their apprenticeships are the start of successful careers in business.
