Waterborne container coatings
News from China has emerged that will have an impact on shipping containers around the globe. Manufacturers in China have committed to using waterborne paints in the production of shipping containers, moving away from solvent based coatings. This is an initiative of the CCIA (China Container Industry Association), in response to the introduction of environmental regulations in the country designed to decrease VOC emissions, which are solvents that are released into the air as coatings on shipping containers dry.

The CCIA began to implement the use of the waterborne coatings in South China from July 2016 and the new approach will be used in the rest of China from 1st April this year. China produces up to 95% of the world’s shipping containers, so this news will have an impact everywhere. The waterborne coatings have been extensively tested to ensure that they deliver the same standard and level of durability. We will continue to monitor developments and work to minimise any potential impact on supply or price. We welcome a reduction in the environmental impact of shipping container manufacture, but it is vital that this does not have a negative impact on the quality of the end product.

Handing over to the younger generation
It is time to wish farewell and a happy retirement to our Newcastle site manager Peter Robson. Peter, who is now 80, has worked at U Hold The Key since 2002 and will be sadly missed by both his colleagues and customers. The good news is that we have found an energetic young successor – 64-year-old Arthur Jennings.

Arthur has been spending a few weeks on site with Peter, learning the ropes, and getting a full briefing on what is expected from a newcomer to the role. Arthur has now taken possession of the keys to the site and he is already working hard to maintain the high standards that Peter has set.

Ean Parsons on Peters retirement:
“We are very sad to see our site manager at Newcastle, Peter Robson leave us at the end of this week for his well-earned retirement.  Peter has been with us on our Benfield Business Park site since 2002 and is very popular with our customers and staff.  After a career with British Rail and rail industry he brought his excellent organisational skills to our storage business and I think everyone who knows him will agree, has kept a well-run operation.  Peter is being replaced by Arthur Jennings who, like Peter before him, is bringing a wealth of operational and commercial experience to the role and I am sure Arthur will be a worthy replacement and be equally popular with our storage customers.  All at Parsons Containers and U Hold The Key would like to thank Peter and wish him all the very best for the future.”

UHTK Sunderland
Our new site in Sunderland is proving to be popular. Located under the Queen Alexandra Bridge (on Crown Road, Low Southwick, SR5 2BS), the site is fully operational. Currently, there are 26 stores, and we are going to increase capacity to 40 by the end of February, with more new ‘one trip’ 20ft containers, and the ultimate capacity of the site is over 100. This growth is being planned to meet demand, so if you are interested in a store on the site, please don’t delay getting in touch on 0800 389 43 19 or follow our link here

Repeat business
A new year always seems to inspire people to try fresh ideas and progress projects, which in turn has a tendency to bring an increase in demand for shipping container conversions. Over the last few weeks, we have fielded a lot of enquiries from customers who have seen previous conversions that we have been responsible for and have asked for similar modifications. We are currently busy working on a wide range of conversions, taking shipping containers and turning them into offices, generator stores and workshops, to name a few.

Parsons Containers targeted container conversions from our early days in 2000, making them a core activity of the business because we enjoy the challenge of innovation and acquisition of skills.

We relish the task of converting a container. Have a look at some of the jobs we have completed in recent years here.

Parsons Group News
As if overseeing a growing group of companies isn’t enough of a challenge, our MD Ean Parsons has signed up to tackle an ironman triathlon this year – that’s a 2.4 mile swim, followed by 112 miles on a bicycle and a 26.2 mile (marathon) run, all on one day. Ean’s target is an event in Austria on 2nd July and he is already immersed in a grueling training programme.

Ean is writing a blog about his progress, to give an insight into the kind of commitment required just to get to the starting line in good enough shape to contemplate being able to complete the event. Keep track of his progress here and look out for updates in future editions of this newsletter.
