Hey Local Lovers!

We can’t believe it’s already been a month since our last newsletter!

Where did the time go? We’ll tell you, just keep reading!

31 SKULLS IS BACK!

REVENGE OF THE SKULLS

(Photo by @redwallsunny. Shot at Redwall Studio)

31 Skulls is Local Color’s annual spooky season fundraising event where we invite artists to decorate ceramic skulls to raise funds for public art projects and showcase the imaginative diversity within the community.

In 2020 we raised $3,500 and we hope to beat that this year.

Last year, the event was live-streamed from the Local Color Keystone studios. This year we’re holding the raffle safely, in person, in downtown San Jose.

Event & Raffle Dates TBD

(Concept sketches by Roberto Romo)

In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15 to Oct 15) we are thrilled to continue developing a tribute mural to organ donors in partnership with Donor Network West and the San Jose Downtown Association at Higher Fire Clayspace, led by muralist Roberto Romo. We are now more than 60% through the design phase. We are expected to begin painting in early October!

Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month by visiting MACLA to see their current exhibition:

LOCAL COMMONS

FISCAL SPONSORSHIP BY LOCAL COLOR

The Local Commons (Fiscal Sponsorship) supports the many logistics surrounding funding for creative projects centered in the South Bay Area. Launched in February 2021, our goals are to expand access to restricted funding resources and foster sustainability. We seek to build relationships with cultural producers seeking funds to significantly enhance mission aligned community projects. Since starting this program this year we have helped direct $50,000 to underfunded BIPOC grassroots artistic projects in San José.

Commons Member Highlight: San José is Not For Sale

(Photos by @sjnotforsale)

San José Is Not For Sale: A Community Project, is a community-born documentary series displaying a combination of storytelling, cinematography, inspiration, and the talents cultivated in this city. What began as a podcast, FIRM by Michael Cabaña has evolved into to a collaborative documentary series. Keep an eye out for the crew during local events like the recent Viva Calle SJ!

DOWNTOWN DOORS 2021

ONLINE ARTIST RECEPTION

“The San Jose Downtown Foundation is focused on enhancing the cultural and aesthetic environment. The Foundation’s signature program is Downtown Doors, which not only beautifies public spaces by putting artwork on otherwise flat service doors and utility boxes, but gives high school students the golden opportunity to post messages about their views of the world through mass media and art.” - San Jose Downtown Foundation

Due to in-person event restrictions, the event is virtual again this year. We hope many of you will be able to attend to honor these amazing High School students who are so talented!
