By Trisha Kostelny, Political Outreach Chair

I have been so inspired by the actions of our volunteers and organizers this past month. I wanted to recount just some of the extraordinary things that they are doing to get out the vote for Democratic candidates.

First, the courage that volunteers show is so admirable. We have brand new volunteers who have said that they are willing to canvass for the first time because democracy is at stake. This is no small feat. They return from their shifts and tell us about their conversations and we in leadership all simultaneously say, “Wow, they’re going to be so good at this!” They bravely knock on doors, finding out that the average voter is kind and willing to chat for a moment.

We have new student canvassers taking two canvassing turfs a week and bringing in friends to train. They are also rallying other canvassers at Lawrence to join us. They have busy class schedules but are still finding the time to scoot/walk/skateboard their way to homes because they want a say in determining a vision for their futures.

We have a new neighborhood action team in Hortonville! They are acting on their Democratic values and bringing other like-minded volunteers together in a mostly rural community -- challenging [but important] work. Together, they are building a team and mobilizing to let voters know about our candidates.

We have other individuals going above and beyond, too! Each day, I’m finding that people are stepping out of their comfort zones and doing things that were not initially asked of them. We had many canvassers come back from shifts eager to deliver signs to those who requested them. They had formed a bond with the voter and wanted to see them again and follow through. We had a volunteer doing data entry for us who was following up with a wheelchair-bound voter and getting them the necessary resources to vote. Other volunteers are finding new, inventive ways to get out the vote -- from parades to sign rallies.

Our Heart of the Valley team is even holding their own canvassing + phone banking event for their assembly candidate, Joey Van Deurzen, because they value his ideas and his commitment.

And finally, I am further inspired by our campaign managers and field and regional organizers who spend countless hours on the phones recruiting and organizing volunteers. They work long hours and show us their hearts every day. They care that all of us are treated equally, that our earth is cared for, that the economy works for everyone. They believe that voting and healthcare are our rights and that truth matters.

My heartfelt thanks to all of you who so bravely and courageously have shown that these things matter to you, too. We can’t wait to work with you in the next weeks.

Who will you inspire?
