APR Group Gets New Name, Website Makeover
The APR Group is now the SPR Group. The new name reflects the name change of the course from Advanced Public Relations to Strategic Public Relations. The name change is one of several changes to update the curriculum in the Department of Communications.

Also the website ( has been updated to make it easier to navigate. It also features links to clients' websites and a new student blog. 
Social Media Seminar Honed Students Professional Skills
SPR Group students Tierra and Joel  presented a workshop called "The Gift and the Curse" at the 2nd annual Social Media Seminar, Oct. 6. They received rave reviews from students, parents and fellow event coordinators at the event hosted by Prince George's County Council Member Todd M. Turner, 4th District, (led by Tomeka Bumbrey, chief of staff; and Evelyn Archie, community outreach coordinator). Held in the Center for Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Nursing, the event attracted middle and high school students, and their parents; it provided a variety of workshops for each age group to inform them about the benefits and dangers of social media. Mathis and Peebles were among seasoned professionals who presented (Kristian Owens, social worker; and Jade Mathis, Prince George's County States Attorney). 

SPR Group Arwa assisted Joel and Tierra with their presentation, and the event coordinators and planning partners in the planning, promoting, and setup of the event. Honored guest speakers included Dr. Aminta Breaux, president of Bowie State University; and Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks. The SPR Group Welcomes New Clients
The SPR Group welcomed new clients and tackled challenging projects during the semester. a team (Dana, Erika, Nicole). Students assisted the Bowie State University Career Development Center (Rosetta Price, director) with developing and executing a marketing plan to spread awareness of their various services to the student body with a focus on commuter students. The Prince George's County Department of Family Services (Jackie Rhone, Division Manager; and Natasha Hutton, Community Developer) worked with a team of students (Alexah, Emanda, Gilbert, Michael) who updated fliers to better target their audience, and generated leads for potential partners for their Safe Dating Project. An emerging black-owned financial company, Power Corps, gained some insight about how to inform and educate college students about their new cryptocurrency. PowerCoin (Timothy Webb, founder) through social media. Dustin and Reginald worked with this client.
PRSSA Annual Networking Event 
On Friday, Nov. 30, the Bowie State Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) hosted its 2018 annual networking event, with assistance from the SPR Group, for students to connect with professionals in the industry at the Center for Natural Science, Mathematics and Nursing. Professionals for this year's event included LaDonna M. Smith (PG Valor), Renee Kelly (KellyGirl PR), Jessica Josey (DDC), Sydney Cano (Pres,George Mason University PRSSA), Joshua Garner (MensHealth Network), Brian Hart (Flackable), and Ashley Simms (FleishmanHillard). Brandon Johnson (in photo with Simms), BSU PRSSA chapter president, moderated a panel session; the panelists shared lessons learned from their first public relations jobs, internships, starting a business, and what they look for in students. 
Scholarship Opportunities 
Bowie State University will offer $1,000 scholarships to two 2019 graduating seniors from Prince George's County Public Schools. To be eligible, students must have registered for and attended the 2018 Social Media Seminar: Changing the Game! In honor of BSU communications graduate (2017) Darnisha Johnson, who passed away in May 2018, the university in cooperation with the BSU PRSSA chapter has established the Darnisha Fund. Darnisha was a student leader, serving as PRSSA vice president (2015-16), and president (2016-17). She excelled academically and gained top notch skills as an account executive (Ketchum), intern at the White House Initiative on Excellence for African Americans, and from internships at several other organizations highly recognized for their public relations work. The university is accepting donations to the Darnisha Fund via online,, and by mail at BSU Foundation, P.O. Box 939, Bowie, MD, 20718.  

Meet the Editor

"Daryn E." Anderson is a graduating senior majoring in Communications with a concentration in Public Relations. She received her Associate's of Arts in Journalism & Public Relations from Prince George's Community College in 2017. Currently, she is a member of the Lambda Pi Eta and Sigma Alpha Pi honor societies and maintains a 3.8 GPA. A non-traditional student, she works full-time as a Senior Technical Librarian in the Flight Projects Directorate at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Daryn E. is also a freelance journalist with over 10 years of experience in PR and media in areas including press releases, radio broadcasting, programming, production, event planning, talent management, and crisis management. In her spare time she loves to travel and is a voracious reader.
