September is Suicide Prevention Month

Suicide is among the top 10 causes of premature death in Napa County.  Napa County Suicide Prevention Council is working locally to educate our community to reduce Napa county’s suicide rates.  The Napa County Suicide Prevention Council membership includes friends and family members who have been impacted by suicide, law enforcement, schools, public and private health professionals, and not-for-profit community based organizations.
  • Universal Screening: Columbia Suicide Severity Rating (CSSR) Scale:  Ole Health, Aldea Children & Family Services, Napa County Mental Health, and Napa Unified School District recently implemented this simple screening tool to identify those at risk for suicide.  Our goal is to have universal screening throughout the county, wherever there may be people at risk. Click CSSR button below to receive more information on this life saving tool.   Training takes 30 minutes or less!
  • Gatekeeper Training: Question, Persuade, Refer:  Anyone can learn about the Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) model to intervene when they identify someone at risk for suicide. This 90-minute training offers information and skills to help briefly interact with individuals at risk and guide them to mental health services that may save their lives. Click the Gatekeeper Training button below to book a training for your group.

Anyone can be at risk for suicide, and anyone can help.  Let’s work together to prevent suicide in our community, because suicide impacts us all.

Napa County Public Health is offering free flu vaccines at various locations across the county from September 22 to November 6.  Please refer patients or staff if they are unable to get flu shots in your medical practices.

Additionally, on October 2, 2019, a Health Officer order will be issued to healthcare providers, medical practices, hospitals, long term care facilities, skilled nursing facilities and EMS providers that requires each health care facility to receive an annual flu vaccine or to wear a mask, which will be effective from November 1, 2019 to April 30, 2020.

National Preparedness Month:  Sign up for the Napa County MRC!

September marks National Preparedness Month and is a reminder to sign up for the Napa County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC).  Healthcare providers are crucial in the success of emergency response by providing volunteer healthcare services at shelters and taking care of patients in healthcare facilities during disasters. People who sign up for the Napa County MRC will undergo training and will be invited to participate in preparedness exercises to maintain skills and to get to know other Napa MRC team members. There have been several trainings conducted by our MRC coordinator since June.

Message from Dr. Karen Relucio, Health Officer
September marks Suicide Prevention Month. Suicide has become a public health issue, as suicide rates are rising in every state in the country and it is one of the top causes of premature death in Napa County.  Suicide has hit home for me personally; I lost a nephew who died by suicide 9 years ago and my niece was recently hospitalized for a suicide attempt.  Many of us know family, friends or patients that have died by suicide.  The good news is that suicide is preventable both by the healthcare community and by community members who care.

September is also the start of flu vaccination season, where Public Health will hold several free flu clinics in the community.  Additionally, September marks National Preparedness month and is a reminder to encourage you to please join the Napa County Medical Reserve Corps.
