Hearthstone Award

Hearthstone, our domestic violence support service, has been selected as a finalist for the Women in Housing awards.

The announcement by judging panel in the ‘improving the lives of women or communities’ category brings further national recognition for the team and the help they provide to some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

Set up 15 years ago in Haringey, Hearthstone provides a vital role for nearly 500 residents a year who have been the victim of domestic violence and abuse. Domestic violence is a significant cause of homelessness in London and fear of losing a home can often trap people in violent situations.

This is the second year in a row that the service has been a finalist for a national award following an appearance on the shortlist for last year’s Housing Heroes Awards.

The winners of the Women in Housing awards will be announced in October 2018.

Stay Safe in Hot Weather

It has been hotter than the Mediterranean for the last few days, and while many of us welcome the heat it is important to stay safe and healthy.

The main risks posed by a heatwave are:
  • Dehydration (not having enough water)
  • Overheating, which can make symptoms worse for people who already have problems with their heart or breathing
  • Heatstroke
Top Tips for coping in hot weather:
  • Shut windows and pull down the shades when it is hotter outside. You can open the windows for ventilation when it is cooler.
  • Avoid the heat: stay out of the sun and don't go out between 11am and 3pm (the hottest part of the day) if you're vulnerable to the effects of heat.
  • Keep rooms cool by using shades or reflective material outside the windows. If this isn't possible, use light-coloured curtains and keep them closed (metallic blinds and dark curtains can make the room hotter).
  • Have cool baths or showers, and splash yourself with cool water.
  • Drink cold drinks regularly, such as water and diluted fruit juice. Avoid excess alcohol, caffeine (tea, coffee and cola) or drinks high in sugar.
  • Wear loose, cool clothing, and a hat and sunglasses if you go outdoors.
  • Check up on friends, relatives and neighbours who may be less able to look after themselves.
