“Stretch your comfort zone.

Dear Friends,
I waited until July 4th to share with you an update of our Arkansas CCL June accomplishments, first because I needed a little break after D.C. and second because what we did in June epitomizes participatory democracy.  On this Independence Day, I hope you’ll take a moment to savor this summary of June’s actions and the photos that follow.
  • I love what we accomplished together by going to D.C.!  Nineteen Arkansas CCLers participated in CCL’s June Conference and Lobby Day from June 10 -12.  This was the most diverse team we’ve ever assembled in terms of age, profession, race/ethnicity, and geography and Congressional district representation.  We came back more confident, more connected with each other, more informed and more fired up.
  • Did you pick up the phone for our June 6th Congressional call in?  Your voice helped build momentum for productive D.C. meetings with Members of Congress/staff from each of our six Congressional offices.  Thank you!
  •  While some of us were in D.C., Nancy Brown (Fayetteville Chapter), Mark Mulkerin (Little Rock Chapter), and Donnal Walter (Little Rock Chapter) joined forces to secure, prepare for, and attend a meeting with the Arkansas delegates to the Episcopal Church’s General Convention in Austin, which is now just days away.   This was a big deal. The delegates had hundreds of Resolutions to review, but thanks to Nancy, Donnal, and Mark’s connections and respectful persistence, we were given ten valuable minutes to review with the delegates the resolution asking the Denomination to support CCL’s Carbon Fee and Dividend.
  • In addition, Robert McAfee (Fayetteville/Fort Smith Chapters), Bill Melchior (Little Rock Chapter) and Clay McCastlain (Little Rock Chapter) represented Arkansas CCL at the Arkansas Citizens’ First Congress Convention and participated in the Environmental Caucus.  Our membership in the CFC is longstanding and is one of our most important partnerships.
  • Fayetteville Chapter Leader, Pam Nelson, invited representatives from the non-partisan League of Women Voters to speak to the Chapter about the ins and outs of voter registration in preparation for summer community outreach.
  • Our Jonesboro and Mountain Home Chapters officially flipped to active!  That makes two active chapters in the First District. Thank you to Jean Larson and Helen Gratil in Jonesboro for keeping the faith and to Ann and Mark Segura and the Mountain Home Twin Lakes Sustainability Volunteers for welcoming a CCL action committee!
With deepest appreciation for your participation in and support of Arkansas CCL,

Jan Schaper
