New Campaign Seeks to Support Homeless Students Through Education

A recent study revealed a shocking figure: young people without a high school diploma are 4.5 times more likely to experience homelessness later in life. With 1.3 million students preK-12 currently experiencing homelessness in America, we know that the path to graduation can also lead them to a better future.

That’s why SchoolHouse Connection in partnership with America's Promise Alliance, the Institute for Children, Poverty and Homelessness, and Civic Enterprises, announced today the launch of the Education Leads Home campaign at SXSW EDU. Education Leads Home is the only national campaign of its kind focused solely on addressing the educational needs of homeless children and youth.
With an aim to improve the lives of homeless children and youth across all stages of academic development, the campaign has set three national goals:
  • to ensure that young children facing homelessness will participate in high-quality early childhood programs at the same rate as their housed peers by 2026;
  • to increase the high school graduation rate of homeless students to 90 percent by 2030; and
  • to raise post-secondary attainment to 60 percent by 2034.
All too often, homeless children and youth remain unseen and underserved. By focusing on increasing access to quality early childhood programs, and keeping students in school, we can ensure that their homelessness does not jeopardize their opportunity for future success and stability.
