Dear IM4US Community,

Events over the past months have caused significant anguish and stress for many. We have watched as the Ukranian people have united in strength despite extreme challenges. We are thinking of all of you who are personally connected to Ukraine, and invite IM4US members to share ways that we can support the health and wellbeing of people who are in Ukraine and those who have left as refugees.

We also acknowledge the continued wars in other parts of the world and send our support to all people being displaced from their homes. We know that many of you provide healthcare to people newly arrived in the United States from around the world, and encourage all members to provide resources and support as you are able.

At IM4US we are preparing for
our annual conference, which will happen virtually from October 6-8 and will focus on “Decolonizing Medicine: Centering and Rebuilding Grounded Approaches to Healthcare.” We welcome your proposals for experiential or research-focused presentations by May 9th. Many of our members will be presenting at the upcoming International Congress for Integrative Medicine and Health in AZ. There will be an informal IM4US meet-up at the Congress on Tuesday, May 24th at 6 PM local time. Please contact IM4US Board Director Jude Bornstein-Chau if you would like to attend.

We are celebrating the confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, the first black woman to hold this position, and the appointment of Dr. Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo as the new editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), the first person of color to lead JAMA. Globally,  we see COVID cases starting to decrease and in-person socializing returning. As we move toward the second half of 2022, may more good news emerge for all.

From all of us at IM4US, we thank you for your continued support!

With Immense Gratitude,

The IM4US Team

IM4US 12th Annual Conference

 Virtual - October 6-8, 2022

Decolonizing Medicine: Centering and Rebuilding Grounded Approaches to Healthcare

 Call for Proposals

From 2021 Conference Attendees:

This conference is amazing. This is the most sincere health equity & justice-themed conference in healthcare I have attended in the past 18 months.

I am more hopeful about possibilities for a healthcare system that is empowering instead of oppressive and can provide examples from this conference about successes!

Thank you so much for offering this conference. I was moved to tears many times. I have been waiting for content such as this for a long time and so very grateful that IM4US took the leap. The integrity of the goals as well as the content of the conference was so inspiring. Please keep following in this same direction for future work and conferences.
Please continue advancing with the theme of decolonizing medicine. I really appreciated this conference and feel like IM4US could continue with a deeper dive into all of these topics. I think this organization is one of the few orgs in the U.S. right now doing this important work.

Congratulations Dr. Anjali Taneja!

Long-time IM4US Member and 2021 Conference Keynote Speaker, Dr. Anjali Taneja has received the PNM Award for Individual Excellence in Ethical Business Practice in Honor of John Ackerman.

Traditional and Indigenous Medicine Conference

Whole Health Strategies: Integrating Behavioral Health, Criminal Justice and Indigenous Culture for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN)

Tuesday-Wednesday, May 17-18, 2022

Location: Virtual Conference

AI/AN are over-represented in our Federal, State and local prisons and jails. While the understanding of trauma in our criminal justice system needs substantial development, the understanding of historical trauma, particularly as it impacts the AI/AN community, is minimal. Failed recovery and rehabilitation while in custody leads to re-incarceration and rippling negative impacts on the individual, family, and community. This webinar will help you develop strategies to incorporate indigenous culture into the recovery and rehabilitation process that may help decrease incarceration for AI/AN. The duration of the webinar is a day and half.

Audience: Staff who work with incarcerated AI/AN in criminal justice or behavioral health settings, in Tribal or urban communities; All who are interested in having the criminal justice and behavioral health systems better support and serve the needs of AI/AN individuals and communities; All who are interested in integrated health.

-Robert Yazzie, Chief Justice Emeritus of the Navajo Nation Supreme Court, will speak on Restorative Justice.

-Michael Yellow Bird, Ph.D., author of Decolonizing Pathways Towards Integrative Healing in Social Work, will speak about his work.

-Patti LaBoucane-Benson, author of The Outside Circle – a valuable resource to anyone working with justice-system involving AI/AN.

-Five additional speakers, four panel discussions, and three presentations of traditional dance, music, and drumming.

This event will be free and open to all. Some sessions will be recorded and freely available online after the event.
