Dear Chapter Presidents:
I am writing to update you on the status of our public website, wildones.org. Please share this information with your chapter and members as needed.
I regret I must share that this morning, we learned our public website and subsites had crashed again. We immediately contacted our site host, Bluehost. We learned that something caused our site to be deleted around 4:15 AM today. Bluehost Level 2 technicians obtained a copy of our backup provided by Wild Ones and began the restoration process. They were to email when they had a resolution.
I just talked to Bluehost again to find out the restoration status and expected completion time. Our case has been escalated and Level 3 technicians are now working to attach our drive, which detached. I have been unable to talk to these technicians so I will continue to monitor the situation and wait for word from Bluehost. If our site is not restored overnight, I will contact Bluehost again in the morning.
I want to assure you that Wild Ones takes these server crashes very seriously. Website outages affect the dissemination of information, our chapters’ productivity, and the organization’s reputation as a whole, and recurring crashes are simply not acceptable.
Here’s how Wild Ones is proceeding. After the site crashed in January, research was done to find a new website host. One was identified, and the National Board and staff approved a switch to the new host. The final details of our multisite hosting package are being worked out this week, and the migration will begin as soon as possible.
I understand everyone’s frustration with our website crashes, and how long it takes to troubleshoot and correct them. Please know we are working as quickly as we can to both restore our site on Bluehost and to migrate our national and chapter websites to a more reliable host.
I know the website crash is a major problem for chapters trying to promote spring conferences and other events. Please continue to utilize your social media accounts to share information with the public and your members. If your chapter needs a membership mailing list while the site is down, we can export one from the database in the office. Please call 920-730-3986 and leave a message with your name, email address, and chapter name if you need a list while the member site is unavailable.
I am hopeful that our website will be back up soon, and confident that the site will be more stable with our new host. Although the path is long and painful at times, Wild Ones is taking steps to greatly improve all its technology so we can share our mission in new areas and grow our chapters to get more native plants in the ground.
Thank you for your patience, and again, I apologize for this major inconvenience to our chapters and members.
