Hi Families, Staff, and Learners!

It has been a great start to the year.  So many staff, families, and most importantly, kids have commented about how wonderful everything is going! Kudos to all of you for making this happen.  Also, thank you to everyone who voted for Food for Thought. The announcement of the grant winners will be on September 25th and we have a very good chance.

As I reflect on the start and look to the future, my word is ELEVATE!  With the onward and upward theme in place and greatness happening everywhere, it seems that this is the year to elevate.

Elevate all staff in all departments to find great fulfillment and take their work to a higher level.
Elevate all learners to be excited about learning, to grow academically and to ignite their sparks.
Elevate all home school primary mentors to be the best teachers they can be
Elevate Vision Charter Academy as the leader in individualized education and parent involvement, offering diverse opportunities within our communities.

As we strive to engage, educate, equip, encourage, empower, energize we are confident that the result with be to ELEVATE!

 The second annual VCA Read Away READ a Thon will be kicked off at the Back to School Event on September 6th.  Remember the money from the read a thon goes 100% to fund the clubs and that there are great prizes for those who read the most minutes or raise the most money!  Start picking out your books and talking to your friends, relatives, and neighbors about sponsoring you today!

The Denver Nature and Science Museum


We will be touring the museum on Saturday September 15th 10:00 am.  Every student has a free admission. Adults are $16.95. If you would like to stay after we tour the museum and do the IMAX or the planetarium you are on your own for the cost for that for your family.  Sign up HERE if you and your learners would like to go.
 
Colorado American Legion Auxiliary Writing Contest last spring. The essay title was "What can I personally do to promote Americanism in my school or community? " Each winner will recieve a certificate and $25. Thank you Tom Hensley for guiding your learners and submitting their essays!

At Vision Charter Academy it is our goal to give every learner and his/her family a voice and a choice in their education so they can achieve. We do that in many ways: outstanding teachers providing classroom instruction, strong support for parents providing instruction at home, exceptional homeschool support through Highly Qualified Consultants, quality curriculum, a broad range of assessments to identify student needs, and a system of support resources and tools for every learner at every level. Come meet your Board of Stewards
  Join your board members in the VCA highway cleanup along highway 65 mile marker 20 to 21.
   Members of the board of stewards will be cleaning up Vision’s adopted highway on Friday September 28th from 10- 12. Come meet, chat, or just pick up litter.  Meet at the Surface Creek campus by 9:30 to carpool, or park at the Old Grand Mesa Highway turnoff.  Vests and trash bags will be provided by CDOT.  This is a great way to enjoy the fall colors on the Mesa, if attending please watch this video

RULER and REFRESHMENTS (R &R)

Workshop Series for Parents/Guardians

Introducing the RULER Approach and Emotional Intelligence

Family life is the first place that we learn to recognize, understand and manage our emotions. How can we, as parents, provide our children with the experiences that they will need to make sense of their feelings and the feelings of others? How can we demonstrate the importance of ‘choice’ when responding to our own feelings and the feelings of others?

Join Ms. Kathy Taylor, School Counselor, for 5 interactive workshops to learn about how Vision Charter Academy is working to create a positive emotional climate for learning and developing the social and emotional skills of our school leaders, teachers and students. Family members will learn about the science of emotional intelligence and how we are applying the skills of emotional intelligence in our school with RULER. You’ll learn how to use RULER to help build trusting relationships at home while developing skills that will serve your child for a lifetime.

We will offer the 5 part series on both the Delta and Surface Creek Campuses. Childcare and Refreshments provided at both locations.  At each session, participants may enter their name in a drawing for a Wal-Mart Gift Card.  The drawing will be held before Thanksgiving.

Vanguard Parent Association (VPA) extends to you a hearty welcome!  The new school year is off to a great start and we are so excited to see all the new and returning learners. We will be having an ice cream social for recruitment and elections on September 10th at 3:00 in the Delta Cantina.

We are gearing up to contribute meaningful and fun additions to the event calendar.
VPA will plan, sponsor and facilitate 2 major events this school year:
  • A Festive Holiday Gathering December 14th 1:00-3:00
  • A Spring Fling April 12th 10:00-12:00
We invite you to join our monthly meetings with other ideas and suggestions.  We will set the meeting schedule in our September 10 meeting. Please plan to attend if at all possible.  We would love to have parent/guardian representatives from all campuses and learning paths.

At the end of this STEM you can take home the instructions to build your own hovercraft at your home.

Calling all 4th Graders!
National Public Lands Day is a national campaign that started 25 years ago. I am thrilled to announce the 4th Annual Celebration of National Public Lands Day right here on the Gunnison National Forest--for a day of Learning, Exploring, and Stewardship at Lost Lake Campground on Wednesday, September 26th, 2018. The field trip is also part of a Forest Service initiative to engage youth called Every Kid in a Park--this programs specifically targets 4th grade students nationwide. Attending students will receive a Park Pass, which will grant them and their families access to any National Park for free.
Logistics for the day.
We usually do a rolling start when the first bus arrives at 9:30 and filter in everyone else.
We split the day into 2 sections--(Learning) and (Exploration & Stewardship) with lunch at Noon. The day typically ends around 1:30.
Learning: Consists of 5 educational stations (Approx. 20 min/ea.) where students:
  • Become foresters and use strange forestry tools
  • Identify the mountain peaks and learn the local geology
  • Connect with Nature and Write Poetry
  • Learn how to use a compass and basic orienteering skills
  • Meet the local pack string and gain an understanding of how they contributed to the development of public lands
Exploration & Stewardship:
  • Naturalist Hike Complete a hike to Lost Lake (Approx. 1 hour)
  • Stewardship Projects Build Blue Bird houses and Create Native Seed Bombs. (Approx. 30 min)

Thank you for voting for Food for Thought As we voted to address local hunger needs and offer an amazing service learniing experience for our VCA learners we gained tremendous support from our community.  With 30,000 views, shares, and likes, not to mention all of the videos and posts we really made an impact.  The official announcement of the grant winners will be on September 25th.  We were withiin the top 40 when they took down the leader board for the last 24 hours of voting. So, if we finished strong, which we think we did we will receive $25,000 for our program.  So many did so much, including many of our VCA staff and families.
