Don't Miss This Informative, Engaging Summit!

  • Opening Remarks: Chief Justice Gildea, MN Supreme Court
  • Going Deeper with Person Centered Practices: Sarah Stein, STAR Services
You likely have training and knowledge on person-centered practices and understand the lifestyle and philosophy of it. With all this before you, what do you do now? How do you go to the next step with it for the people you support? Perhaps you have immense desire, excitement, and knowledge in person-centered, but feel “stuck” or uncertain of where to go or how to get there. The goals in this session are to identify what are person-centered practices; recognize the limits that prevent us from going deeper and taking the next steps; and discover how to get past these limits to actually DOING person-centered practices throughout all aspects of your work in supported decision making.
  • MyMNGuardian Demo: Jamie Majerus and Hassaan Shahid
My Minnesota Guardian is a product that should enable Guardians to handle their Guardianship relationship electronically. It is a sister product to My Minnesota Conservator, which was developed for conservators.
  • Implmentation of the Strengthening Protections for Social Security Beneficiaries Act: Doug Nguyen, Ann Robert, Anna Solowiej
This session will provide updates on SSA’s implementation of the provisions of the Strengthening Protections for Social Security Beneficiaries Act of 2018, signed into law on April 13, 2018.  Special emphasis will be focused on the representative payee reviews (review) and educational visits conducted by the Minnesota Protection and Advocacy (P&A) agency.  Other topics to be covered are SSA’s online tools such as the representative payee accounting report and Business Services Online for Organizational Payees.
  • Supported Decision Making Across the River: George Zaske
This presentation will tell the story of Wisconsin’s experience drafting, gathering support and passing Chapter 52 – Supported Decision-Making Agreements in the spring of 2018.
  • Guardianship Complaint Advocate Pilot Project Overview of Outcomes: Marit Peterson
In 2018, the Minnesota Elder Justice Center and the Center for Excellence in Supported Decision Making collaborated on an innovative pilot project directed toward the provision of advocacy services to individuals under guardianship and/or conservatorship. Our advocate was focused on offering support and providing options to individuals with questions, concerns or complaints about their circumstances; and our learning from this project is informing our current advocacy services as well as our plans for the future of this work. This session will explore the MEJC/CESDM pilot project and discuss the learning and outcomes.
  • Tackling Guardianship Challenges Panel: Mary McGurran, Referee Joel Olson, Daniel Blakely, Amanda Hudson; Genevieve Gaboriault
Whose responsibility is that?  Is a guardian needed? What are my rights? Who gets to decide? What can be done if a guardian is being overly restrictive or not making person-centered decisions? This expert panel will work though difficult decision making issues when there is an impairment or conflict by sharing the practice, ethical, legal and policy foundations of their professions.  Bring your questions and learn from case studies.
  • Telling Our Stories: Guardianship & Supported Decision Making 1st Person Experiences: Jeremy Curry and Kerry Gerber
Attendees will enjoy this lively session which presents a unique opportunity to hear the lived experiences of two people who personal experiences with guardianship, and who use supported decision making in their daily lives.  Jeremy’s guardianship was terminated, and Kerry and Jeremy have both experienced living under guardianship, and both are using supported decision making in their daily lives.
