Exhibition: Fabric of Life

Masterly, The Dutch in Milano
4 - 9 April, 2017

In Fabric of Life, her first solo exhibition in Milan, Aleksandra Gaca presents her new textiles – the latest results of a 20-year career in weaving innovation and experimentation. The exhibition consists of a unique sensory environment in which Gaca’s fabrics provide experiences ranging from the tactile to the visual and even auditory, as they muffle and absorb sound.

Casalis Architextiles, Fabric ONDO
“Since we are constantly exposed to an ever-changing stream of digital information today, textiles are more important than ever for the feeling of safety and comfort they provide,” says Aleksandra Gaca. “With their regular structure and harmonious weaves and colours, as well as their sensory qualities  – their ability to soften sound, their reassuring warm touch and their aesthetically balanced appearance – my textiles provide a much-needed sense of rest.”

Fabric of Life features the most recent results of Gaca’s experiments with weaving techniques, materials and colour. New throws and cushions add a fresh angle to Bloko, a fabric with a distinctive rectangular woven structure with a surprising gradient colour effect. Novel colour combinations create a sophisticated, subtle atmosphere. The Architextiles Art panels in acoustic fabrics feature new geometric structures and dramatic contrasts in colour and finish. The exhibition also showcases panels made from Ondo, a new quality in Trevira CS for Casalis, which was created especially for the contract market and is available in 16 different colourways.

Gaca, an early pioneer of 3D woven textiles, often begins by designing a fabric using a handloom before transferring it to industrial machines, combining both craft and high-tech elements in a seamless process. “Weaving is an ancient technology,” she says. “I like to honour the emotional, deeply human quality of woven textiles while constantly pushing the boundaries of the industry. Every step I take inspires me to go further.” Her innovations focus on creating improved structures with better acoustic and insulating effects, using more sustainable materials and designing fresh pattern and colour combinations.

Mondriaan to Dutch Design
Also on show at Masterly this year, as part of the exhibition Mondriaan to Dutch Design, is the design for a unique site-specific piece by Aleksandra Gaca: the auditorium wall covering for Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden, the Netherlands. For this project, Gaca took her inspiration from compositions by Theo van Doesburg, the artist who founded the De Stijl movement in Leiden in 1917. Her finished design will feature in the museum’s reopening in 2019.

Aleksandra Gaca
Born in Poland, Aleksandra Gaca lives and works in the Netherlands. In over two decades as a textile designer she has devoted herself to pushing the technical boundaries of weaving, for example in her pioneering work in 3D textiles. She works with various architects and companies, from John Pawson to Casalis and from W Hotels to Renault, on both bespoke and commercial solutions. “Textiles have a positive effect on our emotions,” she says. “The softening effect on the senses – touch, sight, hearing – is something I find very important in the modern world and what I most want to share.”
