TWIG Talk
October 2022 Newsletter

You’ve probably heard the old saying, “When one door closes, another one opens.”  Well, that’s literally what happened to TWIG for our Tuesday, October 4th meeting.  Originally, the meeting was to take place at the Mirada restaurant at Boatworks in Tahoe City.  But five days before the meeting, we received a phone call from Marie Murphy, the Owner and Manager of Boatworks and CEO of MJD Development, who shared the sad news that Mirada was closing its doors.  However, Marie quickly pivoted and saved the day by opening the door next door  Jake’s On The Lake was happy to host the meeting!

We could not have asked for a more gorgeous day at Boatworks, and with the lakeside view, it was a perfect setting for the meeting.  Attendees arrived early and ready to party with industry friends on the deck.

Julie Nobis, Owner and Director of Sales for Creative Coverings, graced the tables with Tahoe Sand linens and Marigold napkins.

Kelly Bride of A Floral Affair selected Fall blossoms and a hint of Dia De Los Muertos to bring her design concept to life.  An assortment of Marigolds, Safflower, Asiatic Lilies. Burgundy Spray Roses, and various dried floral elements, together with black metal vases, wood platters, sacred heart and skeleton parts threaded the theme together perfectly. On the welcome table, a larger arrangement of dried elements set in a copper elevated vase greeted attendees. A mix of A Floral Affair's preservation pieces were set as examples of their floral mortician work, including a cloche, and 2 resin pieces.

On very short notice, Noah Wasserman, General Manager of Jake’s On The Lake, graciously offered a yummy brunch feast in the Agave Lounge.  Their menu included Chicken and Veggie Enchiladas, Pico de Gallo Huevos, Frijoles con Queso, Shrimp Ceviche and Chile-Lime Maize.  Accompanying the delicious food were luscious libations.

As attendees nibbled and networked, Harpist Anne Roos played lovely classical and contemporary harp music to complement the setting.  While industry friends enjoyed the ambience, photographer Amanda Kluesner perfectly captured the essence of the gathering!

Then, the group transitioned into Jake’s upstairs “room with a view” for TWIG’s first ever panel discussion. To ensure that everyone could be heard, Sawyer from Moonlight Mobile DJ provided top-of-the-line sound equipment and introduced the panelists.

Join The Conversation Let’s Talk! was a lively forum, led by Moderator Kathy Newby, Account Executive with AFR Furniture Rental; along with our panel of local experts: Richard Aiple, General Manager, Nakoma Resort; Andy Bomberger, Director of Event Sales, The Club at ArrowCreek; and Karen Nichols, Owner and President, Red Carpet Events and Design.  Here are a couple of questions and answers from the spirited discussion:

Q: How do you empower your management team so they are proactively handling business themselves rather than coming to you with constant questions?
A: Show your management team how you expect them to do things. Teach them the end result. Then hold them accountable to do it right!

Q: How do you deal with an abusive guest who gets out of control at your property or event?
A: Have it clearly written into your contract how unruly clients and guests will be handled.  Detail action to be taken if necessary, such as immediate removal from property or event.  Prior to the event, identify the client’s “go to person” in case of potential problems.

TWIG is most grateful to our inspiring Moderator and Panelists for sharing their collective wealth of knowledge with the attendees!
