From Pastor Jeff
This week, in Acts Chapter 4:23, Peter and John finally returned to the other disciples a day after they had headed off to the temple to pray, and reported about the healing of the lame man, the message preached to thousands, and their rebuke form the Jewish leaders who “commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.” [Acts 4:18].
That early Church responded and, “…lifted up their voice to God with one accord.” Not to mean they repeated all the same words as if they all read from a script, but Luke, the author of Acts, by the leading of the Holy Spirit, summarized the heart of the church as a whole. “One accord” could be described as “The image is almost musical; a number of notes are sounded which, while different, harmonize in pitch and tone. As the instruments of a great concert under the direction of a concert master, so the Holy Spirit blends together the lives of members of Christ's church” [Blue Letter Bible].
That church, described in Acts 4:23-34, was characterized by their unity in thought in that (to name a few): 1) There is only One Creator God; 2) The scriptures from thousands of years past were real, and true and relevant for their day; 3) God is Sovereign and Jesus’ death and resurrection was directed and orchestrated by God for our salvation; 4) That miracles were attention-getting opportunities to preach the word of God boldly so that men would believe in Jesus. Great Grace was experienced by the Church that held these purposes close to their hearts in unity.
What would the Holy Spirit write of our church at Petra? How well would the thoughts, priorities and emotions harmonize together to glorify Jesus and empower us to preach the word of God with boldness?
Please pray with us and for us that in unity our motives and actions would please God, and that we would be empowered to declared His Word boldly to whomever he sends our way. May the whole of God’s church throughout the world be a pleasing melody of unity and purpose. Amen!
Have a blessed week in Jesus!
