First, I want to say to Black students and alumni, my Black colleagues, and our Black community supporters - I know this past week, year, years have been traumatic and so hard. This past week especially has brought to the forefront of the world our pain and our resilience. We see your pain and feel it with you, and we are committed to building more equitable communities with you because Black Lives Matter.
Every day, Byte Back’s work supports Black and Brown communities and helps people survive and thrive.
Even though we don’t often say it so explicitly, we’re going to start saying it more: Our work is racial justice work. Because not only do #BlackLivesMatter, but white supremacy is the reason that 95% of our students are Black and Brown. It's the reason that they and their families are dying from COVID-19. It's the reason that Byte Back needs to exist. And for us to truly change the world in the way we want, we ALL must recognize this, state it, and do everything in our power that we can to change the structures of power in our entire community.
Not only does Byte Back not tolerate any racist or white supremacist acts, but we are actively increasing our anti-racist and equity work. We are investing in embedding racial equity and anti-racist ideology at the heart of everything we do, through training and organized staff action groups. We are also increasing advocacy to better support the Black community.
If you can, please take action with Byte Back and others working in solidarity:
Support nonprofits fighting for justice and organizations like Byte Back, which serve Black communities. Share their messages of justice and #BlackLivesMatter and, if you’re able, please support this work by donating or volunteering.
Our community is beautiful, resilient, strong, smart, talented, and is the future. And we will continue to work with all of you to build a better future.
