2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Deception Pass State Park
By Stephen Mowery, MD, Board Member

2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has changed life we know it in Washington State. Once viewed as a regional public health emergency in Western Asia, the outbreak hit close to home with the United States’ first confirmed case presenting in Washington State in January 2020.

While the park facilities are closed at this time following Governor Inslee’s “Stay Home - Stay Healthy” declaration, the situation and projected re-opening remains very fluid. No one is quite sure when viral transmission will slow or when activity restrictions will be lifted. We are all hoping that the park will be open to enjoy plenty of warm summer days in the forest and on the beaches.  Read more...

Early Bird Song
-By Fran Jepperson

I am a lazy bird watcher.  This time of year is especially fun for us lazy bird watching types who are always watching and listening even though we look like we are paying careful attention to the task at hand.  When I first became obsessed with birds, I was blessed to be a student of Terry Wahl, a well-known Bellingham field ornithologist, who was amazing in his ability to identify birds by sound.  I followed him around for a number of years gleaning every bit of knowledge possible.  Over time, I've come to recognize all our feathered friends by sound.  Read more...

SWING THE GATES 5K RUN/WALK-Postponed until November 1, 2020

Get ready for winter and take a run or walk through the park!  This event was originally scheduled for March 29th and postponed until November 1st.

Bring your family and friends (and dogs on leash are allowed) to join us for a celebration as we ‘SWING THE GATES’ and close Cranberry Lake Campground. This inaugural 5k Fun Run offers a unique opportunity to run or walk through the campground just after the park closes and is a wonderful opportunity to see the main campground when no one is there!

We will open up registration up in late summer so sign up then!

Hello Volunteers,

The safety of volunteers, park staff and visitors is very important.  We want to thank everyone for their flexibility and understanding as the park makes necessary changes and closures due to the Covid-19 virus.  For now, all group volunteering has been suspended while the park is closed.
We will keep you informed of changes as they happen.

Lastly, we want to give a big THANK YOU to all of our volunteers.  A great deal of work has been done so far this year and it is appreciated.

Our hopes are to continue to move forward with the development of the Beach Naturalist Volunteer Program.  We recognize that Beach Naturalist volunteers are vitally important to helping us protect Rosario tide pools, though safety is incredibly important to us as well. We are looking into various options for trainings such as small group session or online formats. Due to the continued developments related to COVID-19 and the recent closures of state parks we will not be hosting any Beach Naturalist volunteer trainings in April.  Our hope is to either launch web-based or in-person trainings in May.
If you are interested in volunteering this year, please follow our three step process to sign up online:
1. View position descriptions: Check out the Foundation’s website for more information about the volunteer positions we are offering this year; Beach Naturalist Level I and Beach Naturalist Level II.
2. Signup online: Use the following link to sign up for the appropriate training or apply for a Beach Naturalist Level II position.
3. Volunteer forms: If you are a new volunteer, you will need to complete volunteer forms, finger prints and an application.  Please email Joy (her contact information is below) for more information.

If you have any question, please contact Joy Kacoroski, Thank you.
