Ahoy sailor!

Happy December! The holidays are in full swing in Annapolis and we’re excited to be in the center of it all. One of our favorite holiday traditions at the School is participating in the Eastport Yacht Club Parade of Lights on Saturday, Dec. 10: A spectacular on the water display of dozens of boats fully decked out in lights for the holidays. We’ll have our Caraluna 245 by Tartan in the parade — keep scrolling to catch a sneak peek of the design process!

While our classes don’t start until April 2023, now is the time to lock in to your spot. Classes are starting to fill for our ASA 103 and ASA 104 courses, so don’t miss out! It’s a great time to lock in your child’s spot in our summer 2023 KidShip program. And for our sailors who want to keep learning even through the winter, we have one course available to tide you over over until spring: ASA 105 - Coastal Navigation. Only 5 spots remain for the January class! More information can be found below.

Finally, as this year comes to a close, we'd like to thank everyone who came out to sail with us this season. We had a wonderful time sharing the joy of sailing with our students and KeelBoat Club members, and we can't wait to see what 2023 has in store.

What's Happening at Annapolis Sailing School

The end of the season is busy in its own way as we put our boats away for the winter. Our marina staff is working hard to get the Rainbows in shape for spring!
Delivery incoming! Staff member Jonah delivered our Sabre 34 down the Bay to her new home for the winter in dry storage.
Our Newport 30 Honu got a thorough end-of-season bottom cleaning after she was taken out of the water and to her new home for the winter.
As much as we love summer sunsets, there’s something special about the beauty of an early sunset as winter draws closer in Annapolis.
ASA 105: Coastal Navigation
Looking to sharpen your skills over the winter? Thinking of moving on to more advanced courses next season? The Sailing School has the perfect course for you — ASA 105: Coastal Navigation. In this course, students will learn the intricacies of navigation by chart, including how to use large-scale charts, tide and current tables, and local cruising guides. You’ll also learn how to use a steering compass, deviation tables, a hand bearing compass, binoculars, a protractor, dividers and more to help you plot your course!

This course is taught in four 3.5 hour sessions over two weekends.
Students must sign up by December 31. Only 5 spots left!

Schedule: Jan. 21-22 and Jan. 28-29 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Cost: $550 (includes textbook, video, sample chart and certification fees)
Parade of Lights
One of our favorite parts of the holiday season in Annapolis is the Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year! On a windy Saturday, several KeelBoat Club members volunteered to come up with a design and decorate one of our Caraluna 245s in true holiday fashion. We think our sailors outdid themselves!

Don’t miss out on seeing our boat in the parade, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Annapolis Harbor.

We recommend viewing the parade from the Eastport Bridge, the Naval Academy grounds, Annapolis City Dock and Ego Alley. Be sure to take photos of our boat!

Crew Quarters
Learn about cool local places, events and more from our staff.

There’s nothing quite like the flurry of activity during December as thousands flock to stores in search of the perfect present, and the shops in downtown Annapolis are no exception. If you’re looking for a more festive and unique shopping experience, check out Midnight Madness in downtown Annapolis. Shops will have extended hours on two Thursdays before Christmas — 4 p.m. to midnight on Dec. 8 and 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Dec. 15, and many others will be open later than normal on the weekends. The special shopping times are enhanced by beautiful holiday decorations along the downtown streets. The event is approved by marketing director Natalie for finding the perfect present from a local small business!

Contribution Corner: Toys for Tots

It’s important to support families and children in need around the holidays, and Toys for Tots does exactly that. Now celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, the Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots program has delivered hope and joy to over 281 million children in need at Christmastime. The program has also expanded to provide year-round help to families in challenging circumstances. We encourage our sailors to donate a nautical-themed toy this Christmas. Drop off locations in Annapolis include the U.S. Naval Academy (2 Truxtun Road), Wine Cellars of Annapolis (1410 Forest Drive Ste. 6), Moe’s Southwest Grill (142 Dock Street) and DoubleTree by Hilton Annapolis (210 Holiday Court). A full list of drop off locations in Annapolis and other areas across the state can be found by searching here
