Teaching starts next week!

As if you needed a reminder! This seems like a good time to remind you that the PTI office is here to support you, whether you have the first-time-teaching-in-a-prison jitters or the "let's just get this semester started" shakes. Wherever you are in your prison teaching journey, we're excited to work with you and invite your questions, concerns, and general venting :)

HELP US ARCHIVE PAST COURSE MATERIALS
Jarrett Drake (a PTI instructor and Digital Archivist for Princeton's Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library) has graciously offered to continue building our archive of course materials. If you taught in the Fall 2016 term and are willing to contribute your materials (course syllabi, activities, etc.), please email them to Jarrett at jmdrake@princeton.edu. Your contributions will go a long way to helping our new (and veteran) instructors develop their courses without reinventing the proverbial wheel. It also helps us create a valuable record of our program's history.

FACULTY OFFICE HOURS
We are pleased to offer drop-in hours for all interested PTI instructors this semester! Feel free to stop by the appointed locales during the following times to chat with a veteran PTI instructor. It's a great time to ask questions, express concerns, and seek support for instructor-related tasks.
  • Mondays, 10-11am (Peyton 113): Hosted by Jenny Greene
  • Thursdays, 12-2pm (Teacher Prep Seminar Room, 2nd floor): Staffed by a rotation of Leadership Team members and University Administrative Fellows
  • Thursdays, 1-3pm (Peyton 106): Hosted by Jill Knapp (also available by appointment or through email at gk@astro.princeton.edu)
Additionally, Tara is in the PTI office Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30am to 6pm, and you are always welcome to contact members of our Leadership Team.

DOCUMENTING STUDENT ATTENDANCE
It's critically important for accreditation and financial aid purposes that we document our students' attendance on a weekly basis. Please make sure you're using the attendance spreadsheets provided by Gen Van Doren at Raritan Valley Community College earlier this week. If you're having trouble accessing the sheets or you didn't get an email from Gen, let Tara know as soon as possible. Thanks for your cooperation!

JUMP IN AND TUTOR!
All PTI instructors are encouraged to dive into tutoring at least once during the semester. Though we realize you're already committing a huge chunk of time to teaching, the tutoring environment offers you a different kind of opportunity to engage with your students either one on one or in small groups. We hold tutoring every Friday evening (5-8pm) at both Garden State and Albert C. Wagner Youth Correctional Facilities. As instructors, your names are already included on the tutoring pass list every Friday evening. If and when you plan to go in, please email our undergraduate tutoring coordinator, Lesa Redmond, at credmond@princeton.edu so she can plan accordingly. She handles the very tough work of facilitating transportation!

AROUND THE INTERWEBS IN 80 SECONDS CONTRIBUTE YOUR IDEAS!
I hope PTI Matters will continue to grow and be ever more useful to our teachers and friends. Please feel free to email your news blurbs and other suggestions to tronda@princeton.edu so we can highlight them here!
Now, THIS is a holiday I can celebrate! It's Chocolate Cake Day! While I'm sure this is just another thinly veiled attempt by the food industry to sell its wares, I am all too happy to oblige. And lest you think I'm a flavor snob, I would also happily observe Strawberry Cake Day, Vanilla Cake Day, Blueberry Cake Day...you get the point.
