NATIONAL SPORTS CONVENTION REVEALS PROGRAMS

The organisers of the National Sports Convention have announced the opening of registrations for its 2018 edition and release of the online conference programs including: global keynote speakers, national community sport conference, national aquatic and recreation infrastructure conference, national sports surfaces conference and national sports development conference.

The 2018 National Sports Convention will be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from July 16-18 and this year will host additional conferences, networking events and new collaborators.

SCARBOROUGH TUNES UP TO HOST 'THE AUSSIES'

The Australian Surf Life Saving Championships or 'The Aussies', with 6000 competitors from Australia’s 311 surf clubs competing in 400 beach and ocean events, will be staged at Scarborough Beach from April 14-22.  

The Aussies will kick off with the Youth championships kicking on April 14-15 from 8am. The ironman and ironwoman finals are scheduled for April 22. Meanwhile, the SunSmart WA Senior Surf Life Saving Championships are on March 24-25.

COMMUNITY TAB JOINS FORCES WITH NETBALL WA

Netball WA has announced a major contributing partnership with Community TAB, which will boost support for regional players living across Western Australia.

The $40,000 deal will fund equipment, uniforms, coaches, umpires and off court education programs for Netball WA’s 10 Aboriginal Grassroots Sites.

BIG TURNOUT FOR SCHOOLS EQUESTRIAN FESTIVAL

Equestrian Western Australia will host the Saddles Plus Interschool Equestrian Festival at the State Equestrian Centre, Brigadoon, from April 18-20.

Nearly 200 horses and riders from 63 schools will compete in dressage, jumping, show horse and combined training classes. Competitors will travel from all over the State for a chance to qualify for the WA team selected for the Australian Interschool Equestrian Championships in Victoria later this year.  Spectators are welcome.

NETBALL CHAMPS CONTINUE TO GROW

The 2018 Smarter than Smoking Association Championships is shaping to be one of the biggest in the netball event’s history, following the introduction of a masters, men’s and boys divisions.

The masters division will be open to females aged 35 and over, while the men’s competition will feature males over the age of 18, with under-14 and under-18 boys divisions also on offer. Held annually since the 1950s, the championships have grown into the largest event hosted by the governing body, with last year’s edition welcoming 270 teams from nearly 40 associations across the State, as well as teams from Botswana and Singapore, and representatives competing in the No Limits Division for athletes with an intellectual disability.

NEW PRESIDENT OF RLSWA

Committed lifesaver Colin Hassell has been appointed president of Royal Life Saving WA for a two-year term.

A life member of RLSWA, Mr Hassell said: "I want to help reduce the number of toddler drownings; that’s my number one passion. Back in 1979, I formed an organisation to look after children who have disabilities, and many of those were a result of non fatal drownings."

Meanwhile the pool catering for the remote Aboriginal community of Burringurrah came to life on March 18 for its annual family fun day. Promoted by Royal Life Saving Society WA, community events such as Burringurrah Family Fun Day are seen as being vital in encouraging swimming and water safety in Indigenous communities.  <<READ MORE>>
MT HELENA TO HOST 40 MILER AND RELAY

The Western Australian Marathon Club will stage the Mt Helena 40 Miler and Relay on April 2, with a 6.30am start time from the Mt Helena Tavern.

All  proceeds are donated to the Chidlow and Mt Helena Bush Fire Brigade. And because of the Easter break, online registrations will close on March 29 at noon.
