NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR RAC WA SPORTS STAR AWARDS

Nominations for the RAC WA Sports Awards to be celebrated at Optus Stadium on Thursday, 7 February 2019.

It's time to reflect on the outstanding contributions made by the many people who contribute to WA sport, with nominations called for in the eight categories, culminating in The West Australian RAC Sport Star Award.

GYMNASTICS WA SEEKS TWO BOARD MEMBERS

Gymnastics WA is looking to fill vacancies on its board and expressions of interest are invited from people with the capacity and interest to contribute to the development of the sport.

Ideally the successful candidates will be experienced in the legal or finance areas. Applications for the volunteer roles, including a cover letter and a current CV, should be sent to Mrs Karon Williams (President, Gymnastics WA) via email to recruitment@gymnasticswa.asn.au or click

WORKSHOP EXAMINES EVENT RISK MANAGEMENT

An event risk management workshop run by Parks and Leisure Australia (WA) on November 1 will examine the growth of community and sporting events run in local governments (both internally and by external providers) and how it has increased expectation and requirements for event planning and management.

The diversity of event activities, locations and audiences plus compliance of event sponsorship and funding, call for stringent event risk management procedures.

SURF SPORTS SEASON KICKS OFF AT SORRENTO

The Surf Sports season officially gets under way with the SunSmart Endurance Championships on October 27 at Sorrento Beach. Open to competitors from under-12 to masters, athletes have the opportunity to compete in long-distance disciplines of ocean swimming, board paddling, surf ski, beach running and surf boat.
 
This year sees the introduction of the SunSmart Nipper Gold which has been inspired by the Coolangatta Gold and allows younger athletes to showcase their endurance skills.

NEW BOARD MEMBERS AND STRATEGIC PLAN AT SWIMMING WA

Swimming WA's Annual General Meeting saw two new board members appointed, and two new life members endorsed. Olympians and Swimming WA Hall of Famers Travis Nederpelt and Lara Mist did not seek a second term. and were replaced by Shaza Salleh and Helen Hull.

CEO also unveiled Swimming WA's Strategic Plan 2019-24 which includes the complete overhaul of the competition structure including a new State League for the pool.

LIMELIGHT FALLS ON NETBALL'S RISING STARS

Western Australia’s rising stars were on display at the State Netball Centre and Wembley Sports Park during the Academy and Cadet cups when more than 70 teams took part, involving more than 1000 players, coaches, umpires, officials and spectators.

Aside from the division team winners,
22 Spirit of Academy Awards were presented to athletes who demonstrated a commitment and attendance to training session, the completion of off-court modules, displayed respect and teamwork on and off the court, as well as strong willingness to be coached.

PLATINUM TAEKWON-DO SHINES AT WORLD CUP

The Platinum Taekwon-Do team came away from the 7th ITF Taekwon-Do World Cup in Sydney with an impressive eight gold, seven silver, and nine bronze medals -- a great effort considering Platinum’s competitors were up against powerhouses New Zealand, Argentina and Poland.

The 24-medal haul left Platinum sixth in the overall ranking, which included national teams, second in the club rankings and the highest ranked Australian club in a field of more than 1000 competitors.

POOL PROPOSAL NEAR ELIZABETH QUAY

A consortium of Western Australian aquatic industry professionals, including developers, architects, engineers and planners, has proposed a floating pool and extensive deck for the Swan River in the heart of Perth city near Elizabeth Quay.

Echoing similar proposals in recent years for the River Torrens in Adelaide and the Yarra River in Melbourne, the facility would be a 100-metre long floating deck featuring a swimming pool/lagoon filled with chemical-free filtered river water, public open space and venues for events and exhibitions.

NIGHT RACE PLANS FOR BARBAGALLO RACEWAY

Perth will host a Supercars night race at Barbagallo Raceway for the first time in 2019, the only night race to be staged in Australia next year.

A night race was trialled in Sydney earlier this year and the event attracted larger audiences compared to traditional day races, including more families.
