November 7: Steve Mushinski

At our meeting on Monday, November 7, Steve Mushinski will be demonstrating techniques he uses in making rectangular bowls.

Steve Mushinski promises to explore a turning challenge: a Rectangular Bowl with a Touch of Elegance! The demo will be project based, with emphasis on design, inspirations and remembering mentors.

Steve has been turning for over 20 years. He is a long-time member of the Woodturning Guild of Ontario (WGO) and he has also held positions on the WGO Executive.
 Steve's teaching credentials include:
  • instructor at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee;
  • featured presenter at Totally Turning in Saratoga Springs, New York State; and
  • demonstrator at all the woodturning guilds in Southern Ontario.
Some TWG members will recall the very informative demonstration Steve and his wife, Sharon, made on marbling techniques at the TWG in November 2014. We look forward to Steve's presentation this year.
Upcoming Events

Malcolm Zander All-day Workshop

Malcolm will demonstrate thin-wall turning, both cross-grain and end-grain, including videos of the techniques used in turning thin walls from dry wood and of the tools and techniques used for piercing.

For more details go to the Announcements page on the TWG website.
For those TWG members who are also interested in a practical follow-up, Malcolm has agreed to do an all-day, hands-on session at Lee Valley in Vaughan on Tuesday, November 22, for a maximum of 6 people. For more details and to register, go to Lee Valley's web page.
Request from the AAW
As you know, the TWG is a chapter member of the American Association of Woodturners (AAW). The AAW wants to obtain a greater understanding of the global woodturning community in connection with its Vision 2020 strategic plan. Earlier this month, the AAW contacted us saying that it is critically important that our chapter members' opinions be represented in the AAW's planning for Vision 2020. Accordingly, the AAW has asked TWG members to complete the AAW's online survey.

Click this link for more information about the AAW's strategic plan.
Holiday Showcase
December 5 is fast approaching. That's when we'll hold our Holiday Showcase -- the friendly annual woodturning competition that displays some of the great work our members produce. If you aren't yet prepared for this popular event, start turning!
Show & Tell Table

Don't forget! Bring something you made.

Anyone who brings a piece for the Shoe & Tell table will receive two free tickets for the wood raffle we'll have at the end of the meeting.
Couldn't attend the last meeting?
If you couldn't be with us on October 3, you missed Frank DiDomizio's demonstration. Frank took us through a comprehensive tour of the creation and embellishment of platters and plates. His handout with valuable notes is available to download.

The Show & Tell table included the first turnings from the Hands-On workshop as well as some remarkable pieces by our members.

To see images and resource material from the October 3 meeting, go to the Gallery and Past Events page on the website.
