      News from the Chair...

Welcome to our first electronic newsletter! With tighter budgets and evolving technology, electronic communication appears to be the most efficient way to keep in contact with  all of our alumni and friends. Let us know your thoughts on the approach.

For those who do not  know me, I have recently take on the role as department chair to relieve Dr. Dan Schaefer from this responsibility. Dan has gallantly served the department as chair for the past 17 years.  My responsibilities as chair started July 1, 2016, but I have been a part of the Animal Sciences faculty since 1980. My prior responsibilities in research and teaching were focused mostly in the area of monogastric nutrition and swine management. I am excited to steward the department as we face the challenges of animal agriculture in the 21st century. Like a living organism, our department is adapting to changes and will need to modify our responses as we continue to strive to serve the needs of our students, citizens, and animal industries of Wisconsin and beyond.
As 2017 rolls in, I’d like to thank all of you for your generous support of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Animal Sciences Department.

In this first newsletter we have highlighted only a few stories about the department, but there’s always so much more happening. Send us a note or stop in for a visit. Go Badgers!

Dr. Dan Schaefer, after 13 years of service and leadership, stepped down as the Department Chair of Animal Sciences as of July 1, 2016 to resume his research program.  Please join us in thanking Dan for his dedication to the Department.  Dr. Tom Crenshaw stepped forward to serve as the next Department Chair.

Friday, October 14, 2016 was a day of great celebration for the new UW Meat Science Building project. This banquet was a unique take on the traditional groundbreaking ceremony. In lieu of hard hats and gold-plated shovels, attendees wore hairnets and received stainless steel salt scoops. Rather than a traditional groundbreaking ceremony, this milestone was commemorated with a formal ham salting.
