Expressing Our Appreciation and Gratitude for Our Recent Retirees

Amid the pain and uncertainty of our current moment, our department bid a fond farewell to four pillars of our community who retired this year. Please join us in celebrating Professors Jane Burbank, Herrick Chapman, Frederick Cooper, and Linda Gordon. Thank you all for your many wonderful contributions to the field and to our community!
On Friday, July 17, members of our community, including faculty, alumni, and staff, raised a glass to celebrate Professor Herrick Chapman, his many wonderful accomplishments, and his impressive and inspirational years of service to the NYU Department of History.
Our community came together again to toast Professor Linda Gordon, her exemplary career, and her 21 years of service to the NYU Department of History on Friday, July 24, 2020.
Earlier this year, the Department of History celebrated the deeply impactful careers of Professors Frederick Cooper and Jane Burbank at a retirement celebration that included a conference, cocktail party, and dance floor!
Professor Frederick Cooper, Professor Jane Burbank, and Professor and Chair Edward Berenson at a retirement conference to celebrate Professors Cooper and Burbank on Thursday, February 20, 2020.
This summer, the Department of History also bid farewell to our beloved colleague Professor Monica Kim.

Although it saddens us to see her go, we wish her all the best in her future endeavors as the William Appleman Williams & David G. and Marion S. Meissner Chair in U.S. International and Diplomatic History at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
The Department of History bids farewell to Kostis Smyrlis who has accepted a position as a Researcher at the National Hellenic Research Foundation in Athens.
We welcome news and announcements to share with our community. Please submit anything you would like us to highlight via the NYU History Department website!
