The club was abuzz this first weekend of the regular sailing season. Dense fog and and a full house were defining characteristics on both days. The fog and a light northerly fighting a southerly sea breeze kept the 505s (Spring Series), J/22s(1st Spring Series day), and Solings (US Championship) from racing on Saturday; Ali Meller led a 505 light air dock talk (video coming soon) and the Solings had a fleet dinner where they shared stories of Stuart Walker. Despite the fog, the juniors were able to compete in the 2019 MASSA Gold Fleet Regatta on both days. On Sunday, south was the prevailing wind direction, but the fog still dominated the morning before burning off in the afternoon. SSA’s Leo Boucher led a well-attended Laser clinic. Some 505, J/22, and Soling sailors got on the water for cruising and practice. With the warmer temperatures, everyone was happy to be at the club, postponements notwithstanding. And Botanas Fajardo's first weekend operating the snack bar was a tasty and fun introduction to the SSA sailing season!

Spring is here! Register for our upcoming spring series and regattas. Registering early helps the organizers plan. TESOD starts in less than two weeks. J/World Thursday Night Racing starts in three weeks.

The Junior Program had a busy weekend with 2 national qualifiers and  3 out of our 4 teams attended.  Key School made it to the MASSA gold fleet which was a co-hosted event between AYC and SSA. This event was to determine which 3 teams would move on to High School Sailing Nationals (Mallory).  Key School finished 12thoverall, which didn’t qualify us for Nationals, but it was a solid showing for some of our younger sailors. This was the first year in the last 4 years that SSA has sent a team to the Mallory qualifier and we are very excited for the future of the high school programs here!  Meanwhile at the silver fleet qualifiers, where the winner moves on to Phoebe King Memorial (Silver Fleet Nationals), Broadneck finished 2ndoverall!  Lead by Senior Emma Snead, we were able to bring some hardware back to SSA!  Emma and Lucien Parker (11thgrade) sailed A division finishing 3rdhad a really solid event winning 25% of the races in the regatta while Morgan Carew (10thgrade) and Josh Becker (11thgrade) finished 6thin B division.  Also, a big shout out to the Spalding B division team made up of Freshman Ava Farley and Senior Caroline Kelly for winning their division!  This was Caroline’s last regatta as a Senior and she went out on top!    We only have a few more events left this Spring High School season and it has been a really solid season of racing for the SSA based teams.
