Dispensing of Paxlovid™ in Community Pharmacies

As of April 12, 2022, all pharmacies with a Health Network System (HNS) account are able to dispense publicly funded Paxlovid™ (nirmatrelvir/ritonavir) treatment to eligible Ontarians. To increase equitable access to Paxlovid™ treatment, individuals will not be required to have a valid Ontario health card or be an Ontario Drug Benefit Program recipient to receive publicly funded Paxlovid™.

Paxlovid™ (nirmatrelvir/ritonavir) is an oral antiviral for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 infection in adults who are at high risk of progressing to serious disease, including hospitalization or death. It is the first authorized oral COVID-19 medication for outpatient use and is intended to be used as soon as possible after diagnosis and within five days of symptom onset.

As with other prescription drugs, Paxlovid™ (nirmatrelvir/ritonavir) must be dispensed in accordance with the Model Standards of Practice for Pharmacists.

Pharmacies can find the Ministry of Health’s Executive Officer notice and FAQ document outlining the details of the community pharmacy dispensing program below:

Annual Pharmacy Accreditation Renewal Now Open – Due May 10

All Director Liaisons or Designated Managers appointed by their Director Liaison to complete this year’s annual pharmacy accreditation renewal are asked to do so on or before May 10, 2022. The application and directions are available online.

New this year – PSSA Declaration

In this year’s pharmacy accreditation renewal, the Director Liaison will be asked to complete a declaration on the AIMS Pharmacy Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA).

Resources for Pharmacy Professionals to Support EDI

In March the College’s Board approved an equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) Commitment Statement signaling their intent related to EDI and the relevance of this work to the College’s public interest mandate. The EDI Commitment Statement formally and publicly acknowledges the College’s dedication to the development of an overall EDI strategy.

Ongoing learning is an important way to support pharmacy professionals’ EDI journey, address potential health inequities for patients and identify any EDI challenges or barriers your pharmacy peers may face. The College is sharing resources that have been curated from a variety of sources and that explore EDI through a healthcare lens. Registrants are encouraged to take the time to review the resources that are most relevant to their interest and practice. If you know of any EDI resources that the College should consider including, please email
