Headache Specialty at Barrow:

10 Year Anniversary!
The headache program at Barrow Neurological Institute has made incredible advancements since 2012, when Dr. Kerry Knievel and Lydia Westergard, RN, first started seeing headache patients. Dr. Knievel, originally from Fort Collins, Colorado has a long-time passion for treating headache patients. She received her Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. Her residency in neurology was completed at Barrow Neurological Institute, as well as a neuromuscular fellowship. As the director of the Lewis Headache Center, she continues to have tremendous vision for headache program development within Barrow.
Note from the Director - With Gratitude

When I came to Barrow, I had a vision of creating a world-class headache program that would bring compassionate, comprehensive care to patients suffering from debilitating headache conditions. In 2017, that vision became a reality with the creation of the Jan and Tom Lewis Migraine Treatment Program. Over the past five years, we have expanded headache care at Barrow to offer cutting-edge treatments and provide multidisciplinary care, changing the lives of thousands of patients. We have also made great strides in research and have expanded our clinical trial portfolio significantly. With the creation of the Lewis Headache Center earlier this year, I feel we are moving forward into a promising new chapter in headache care. My hope is for the Lewis Headache Center to become the world’s premier destination for comprehensive patient care. This includes providing individualized care for patients by expanding the Center’s wellness program, which currently includes physical therapy, yoga, dietician consultations, and social work. We will also accelerate our research into developing new modalities for treating and managing headache disorders, while training the next generation of the world’s leading headache specialists. On behalf of the entire Lewis Headache Center team, thank you for your generous support.

With gratitude,
Kerry Knievel, DO
Director, Lewis Headache Center
Barrow Neurological Institute

Patient Symposium
In 2022, Barrow hosted its inaugural Patient Headache Symposium. The symposium offered an overview of the multidisciplinary approach that is taken when treating individuals with headache and migraine at Barrow Neurological Institute. A collection of informative lectures regarding the pathophysiology of headache and migraine, along with management options, were offered. Patients received education regarding the latest treatments available such as physical therapy, nutrition, and pain psychology. Along with the plethora of education information, guidance and instruction on managing Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and disability paperwork were also provided.
The symposium was a huge success! Below is some feedback from participants.

"Attending the conference was an incredibly validating experience. It was a first for me to attend an event made for people with migraine and headache disorders, and it felt healing to realize I wasn't alone and that what I was going through deserved medical attention and further research. I learned a ton that has already helped me better advocate for myself in my health journey. Thank you so much for this opportunity!!"

"Thank you for providing a compassionate, safe space with trusted providers. I'm finally in the right place after years of trying to find the right support for my condition."

"I appreciated receiving education about what doctors and staff members know about things that may help with migraines. On a side note, it was also wonderful to experience such empathy and kindness."

For those of you who were unable to attend, or those who are eager to learn more from the incredible team at the Lewis Headache Center, we are excited to announce the next Barrow Headache Symposium for patients and providers on April 1, 2023! Conference details will be available soon. To register for the Patient Symposium, scan the QR code or click the Save the Date below!

On the Horizon: Mindfulness Course
The Lewis Headache Center Wellness Team is continuously working to offer more in the Wellness Program. We are currently working on creating a mindfulness course for headache patients.
Mindfulness is the ability to develop awareness in a nonjudgmental way to one's own physical and mental processes during everyday tasks and events. Mindfulness practice has the ability to directly influence one's mental and physical health, and improve overall quality of life. Sessions will include meditation and exercises for awareness development which can be powerful tools for headache patients living with debilitating pain.
If you are interested and want to stay informed about this event, send us an email to YogaForHeadache@DignityHealth.org.
