The Social Impact Festival Pitch Event - It's On Again!

If you're a founder of a social business, apply now for the chance to pitch at the Impact Seed Pitch Event on 27 July. You can also gain promotion, local opportunities for support and invaluable feedback from experts.  Submission deadline is 30 April.

Welcome Jasmine Trethewey

We're a little late off the mark here, because since joining the Impact Seed team 2 short months ago, Jasmine has already added enormous value to our capacity building journey.  Her experience across startup, community and government sectors - with specialisation in mining, health care and education - brings capacity in collaboration, networking and event management to our team.

She is passionate about business development and enabling others to find support, acceleration and opportunities to further their growth, and is doing that in spades, not only for our founders, but for Impact Seed itself!

Are you a purpose-driven individual or organisation making positive social impact happen?  Do you have cutting-edge knowledge, ideas or experiences to share? If you're answering yes, the team at UWA Centre for Social Impact want to hear from you! Make your submission by Friday 28 April to be part of the Social Impact Festival 2017 here:

Our 10 Most Interesting Articles of the Month

We’ve trawled the innards of the internet to bring you a curated look at the world of impact investment, innovation, social businesses, critical thought and reflection, with a smattering of events and news.

1) Inspiring words for the impact investment "doers" from the outgoing CEO of Impact Investing Australia, Daniel Madhavan: "Frustratingly, I have ran into countless people who just cannot wrap their head around the two very different animals of profit and purpose coming together.. I have also met many who have crudely crafted objections that demonstrate they simply haven’t put the work into understanding what this is, or could be.. It can be hard in a space like impact investing as people want to feel like they have all the information before they act. They want certainty which is typically very difficult to attain when doing something new. That’s why I love the pioneers so much. They have accepted that we all need to learn but the best way to do that in a new field is to learn by doing." Dan's article in full at:

2)  WA's new Labor government has its work cut out for it. With new Treasurer Ben Wyatt already saying that is keen on "Expanding the innovation agenda to broaden its focus from simply technology. Social innovation, impact investing..areas that I am keen to explore as Treasurer" .. Will the government return "Innovation" to its more accurate, broader definition as opposed to the myopic tech-only definition of old?
3) NAB have already seed funded profit+purpose enterprises for a few years through their Impact Investment Readiness Fund.  However this year's NAB Foundation grants represent real change as they were previously only open to DGR recipients.  This year they're open to non-DGR recipient Social Businesses as well!  With $50-500K grants on offer, the tide is well an truly turning towards impact investment, not just philanthropy. Applications are open til 21 April 2017
4) Another NAB initiative - the Impact Investment Ready Growth Grant is open from 1st to 30th April and provides impact businesses and mission-driven organisations with grants of up to $100,000 for business, financial, legal and other capacity building support from providers to secure investment. If you're an Impact Business that meets the qualifying criteria and would like to work with us on commercialisation and growth, check it out
5) This is what we mean when we talk about business for good delivering market rate returns and social impact.  It's not just about disruption that lines a new shareholder's pockets.  It's about social innovation that creates value for all stakeholders and great financial returns at the same time.  Lemonade Insurance. A Benefit Corporation.
6) In March Techboard celebrated International Women's Day with a female focus on its startup leaderboard  Amongst them was KinChip Systems - we reckon they're one of WA's best tech startups / social businesses / impact investment opportunities. It's great to see Cath Resnick's dream take shape
7) On the 6th April our friends at Green Fabric are running a session on cooperatives as a organisational model  Co-operatives have been around for a long time; traditionally in farming, wholesale and retail. But the co-op has currently had a revival in other fields, such as housing, food, energy and transport. In this workshop they explore what a co-operative is, what the pros and cons of this model are.
