Thinking about your training and development needs for the rest of the year? Please feel free to browse our updated course calendar and the list of other available courses on our site.
All our courses are designed with your needs in mind, and are run with small numbers (usually fewer than 10) so all attendees feel able to engage with the tutor and other delegates.
Brexit and Eurocodes
We are often asked on courses what impact Brexit will have on Eurocodes. BSI recently issued their update on the matter, which essentially says that "Eurocodes are here to stay and will continue to perform an essential role across Europe and beyond going forward....the intent is for the UK to remain full members of the European Committee for Standardization and European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization post-Brexit".
Further details can be seen in their article, which can be downloaded as a pdf here.

We are delighted to announce that Sam Fish (pictured) and Adam Farrance of DNV GL have recently been signed off their ICE training.
Both Sam and Adam have been supported by our Dr Andy Goodwin for several years in his SCE role with the company.
Adam said "Surepath have been supportive of my development and made sure that their training was adapted to suit my learning style. I was made to feel valued, which helped to build the easy working relationship that led to me being signed off with the ICE."
We much appreciate the feedback, which reflects the ethos and efforts put in by Andy in his support of all of his mentees.
If you are in need of mentoring, or need a mentor for your staff, then please contact Andy Goodwin on 01246 807808 or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org. Andy will happily talk you through what we could do for you to add value to your existing arrangements and processes, without obligation.
More CPD Ideas...
Another newsletter and another set of ideas for CPD that will be useful for all, not just graduates pursuing professional qualification...:
Project Funding - Though not commonly a major competency of civil engineers, where it is relevant candidates for the ICE Professional Review can be asked questions about funding and the impact it has on project procurement and cost controls. As such, it is worth researching this topic to have a general awareness before your review. For example PFI was in vogue once upon a time but PF2 is now preferred - were you aware of this? A good starting point for your research would be this site.
Geotechnical Failures - We always try to avert any project failures, but they do happen unfortunately and ground related issues are all too common. That largely stems for lack of understanding of the ground and often a lack of appropriate investigations. It is a broad topic with lots published on it, but if you want a quick overview of some notable past failures then have a read of this short article. You can easily find much more on the web so treat this article as just a starter.
EIA- The process of Environmental Impact Assessment in the context of town and country planning in England is governed by the Town and Country Planning (Environmental Impact Assessment) Regulations 2017. These regulations apply to development which is given planning permission under Part III of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. A good understanding of these regulations will not usually be required at review, unless you have undertaken such work, but awareness would be beneficial potentially for candidates submitting for their ICE Professional Review. The government web pages are a good starting point to get yourself up to speed.
We hope you find the ideas useful. More will be forthcoming in future newsletters.
New Evening Course
A 6 week evening course on soil slope stability and earthworks is starting on 30 May. It will allow up to 10 delegates to explore the subject matter in more depth than possible during a typical day course. Sessions run from 4pm to 7.30pm.
It costs just £695 + VAT per delegate for all 6 sessions, which will be held at our offices. Course details can be obtained here.
Bespoke Courses Continue to Be a Success
We have continued to deliver numerous courses bespoke for individual clients in recent months. Courses include:
Geotechnical design to EC7
Soil logging to EC7 and BS5930
Mock interview courses (6 of them!) for graduates preparing for their ICE professional reviews
Not surprisingly we have more in the pipeline as they have become a preferred form of training delivery for some. This is because for 5 or more people they are usually cost-effective, they can be tailored to address specific requirements, and they can be a good form of team-building.
If you think one of our courses would be of use to your staff then give us a call and we will do our best to provide you what you require at a competitive price. We look forward to hearing from you!
