                  launched in Heidelberg

ICOS ERIC coordinated RINGO project was officially launched in Kirchhoff Institute for Physics in Heidelberg, Germany, in February 2017. The Kickoff meeting of the RINGO, ’Readiness of ICOS for Necessities of Integrated Global Observations’ project gathered together representatives from some of the 43 partner organisations involved to discuss the activities, organisation and management of this four-year project, funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 programme.

RINGO aims at further development of ICOS RI and ICOS ERIC by focusing on the RI’s scientific, geographical, technological, data-related as well as political and administrative readiness to further strengthen the quality of operations and the level of impact. One of the project’s main objectives is to improve the impact and scientific readiness of ICOS for meeting future challenges in European and global greenhouse gases budgeting, including top-down verification of COP21 commitments.

Congratulations, ICOS Denmark!

ICOS Denmark, Danish National Network member of the ICOS RI family, was officially launched at the Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby on 23rd January 2017.

Around 40 participants took part in the kickoff including ICOS ERIC Director General Werner Kutsch, ICOS Carbon Portal Director Alex Vermeulen, as well as representatives of the modelling community, Senior Researcher Camilla Geels and Associate Professor Guy Schurgers.

ICOS Denmark is a consortium of University of Copenhagen, University of Aarhus, Roskilde University and the Technical University of Denmark. It is financed jointly by the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation and the universities for a 5-year period starting from 2016.

RISCAPE project kick off in Helsinki

Another new EU Horizon 2020 project that ICOS is taking part in - RISCAPE, 'European Research Infrastructures in the International Landscape' - has started at the end of January 2017.

RISCAPE kickoff in Helsinki was an opportunity for 25 representatives from 11 different Research Infrastructures across Europe to meet and begin their collaboration. This multidisciplinary 3-year project includes research institutes in the field of environmental sciences, medicine, physics, astronomy, social sciences, culture, research, energy research and computational science.

ICOS will act as a specialist in the environmental sector of RISCAPE, as it is one of the first ERICs in the environmental domain as well as a coordinating infrastructure of the ENVRIplus RI cluster and a member of several international research infrastructure collaboration activities.

Station labelling in focus at ICOS Marine and
Atmosphere Networks meetings

During March, two ICOS MSA meetings were held in Scandinavia. Ocean MSA Station labelling criteria for different marine stations was discussed at the ICOS OTC and Marine Station Network meeting in Bergen, Norway. After successful station labelling, the marine stations will be able to provide high-quality certified and traceable ICOS data used to calculate the ocean’s role in the carbon cycle and in particular, provide data on the greenhouse gases emitted through human activities.

The Atmosphere Station Network meeting discussion in Lund, Sweden, also focused on station labelling related issues, measurement strategies and techniques as well as the evaluation of ICOS CO
2 and CH4 time series. Prior to the MSA meeting, a field trip was organized to the ICOS Sweden Hyltemossa Atmosphere Station.

ICOS RI featured in Italian Radio24 programme

Dr. Giorgio Matteucci and Dr. Enzo Magliulo, Director and Principal Investigator of the Institute for Agricultural and Forestry Systems in the Mediterranean (ISAFOM–CNR), presented ICOS RI and its aims and mission during an interview for the Italian Radio24 programme “L’altro pianeta” in January.

Dr. Matteucci has highlighted importance of ICOS high precision, long-term standardized measurements. He has also given an insight into current station labelling process which will "guarantee that all the sites included in the ICOS RI Network comply with same standards established by the international scientific community," Matteucci emphasised in the interview.

Moroccan Ambassador visits Hyytiälä Research Station

His Excellency, the Ambassador of Kingdom of Morocco in Finland, Mohamed Ariad visited Hyytiälä Research Station, located in Southern Finland, in mid-March. Morocco is investigating a possible establishment of a sister station in the mountain range of the Middle Atlas. Visit to Hyytiälä offered an excellent opportunity for a first-hand experience and a better view of the research station and measurement instruments of a number of research infrastructures. ICOS RI uses Hyytiälä station to measure and monitor the atmospheric greenhouse gases and the exchange of gases between the ecosystem and the atmosphere.

ICOS to participate in the 4th ENVRI week &
1st EU Environmental RIs–Industry Partnering Forum

The 4th ENVRI week will be held in Grenoble, France from 15–19 May 2017. The week is dedicated to Environmental Research Infrastructures and will host ENVRIplus project related sessions as well as for the first time, EU Environmental Research Infrastructures–Industry Innovation Partnering Forum.

The Forum will be organised from 18–19 May and will include sessions on technological innovation, metrology and standards, and public-private partnership with current and potential partners from the private sector. New products and technologies will also be presented at the Forum exhibition. The event, which is free to attend, will be an excellent opportunity for European environmental Research Infrastructures and private industries to explore opportunities for joint innovation projects.

First Nordic ICOS Symposium to be held in Copenhagen

The 1st ICOS Nordic Symposium will take place at the Technical University of Denmark in Copenhagen from 29th–31th August 2017. The Symposium will be organised every second year alternating with the ICOS Science Conference.

The ICOS Nordic Symposium will focus on the ICOS Nordic stations in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland with an emphasis on the use of results from these stations.  All researchers working with the Nordic stations and data are invited to give oral or poster presentations.

Main sessions of this year's Symposium will be on atmosphere, ecosystem, ocean, cross-cutting syntheses and modelling, outreach and stakeholders as well as on Nordic countries national meetings.

Abstracts for presentations and posters should be submitted via the registration page before June 15th, 2017. The registeration for Nordic ICOS Symposium will open soon.
