We shoot photos, videos, messages, and eat shoots in our salads. While the words “to shoot” may have many different meanings, one thing always remains true; whatever you mean by “to shoot” it is an impactful action with unretractable consequences. The discussion surrounding these consequences and the inherent violence tied to the use of these words is to be explored in this selection.

Takashi Homma shoots the blood trails left by deer killed in Hokkaido’s Shiretoko National Park. The shots, symbolic and abstract, examine the role of the deer, which are considered by some to be sacred. A shoot in growth of the deer population has upset agricultors seeking to protect their crops. To aid in reducing the deer population local hunters are encouraged by the government to reduce the number of deer. The effects are captured by Homma, the last traces of their lives found drawn in red in the snow.
