School publishes new online issue of Contact Magazine 
The digital edition addresses the theme “Social Work in Changing Times,” with content about anti-racism, social action and COVID-19 challenges in addition to updates from faculty, students and alumni.

Raleigh couple's donation to support veteran housing in Tiny Homes Village
Tom and Mary Laraine "Larry" Hines have advocated for more affordable housing in North Carolina and for services to support veterans of the military and their families.

Marbeth Holmes named NASW-NC Myrna Miller Wellons Advocate of the Year
Holmes, MSW '14, was selected because of her passion and advocacy for helping individuals from diverse backgrounds seek higher education and achieve their educational dreams.

Ramirez retires after 30 years of service to UNC 
Ramirez served much of the last 17 years as a training coordinator with the SSW's Family and Children's Resource Program.

Faculty and student recognition and news
Clinical assistant professor Andrea Murray-Lichtman recently participated on the CSWE Task Force to Advance Anti-Racism through the Educational Policy & Accreditation Work Group. The task force was charged to develop an action plan to make social work education stronger by adopting anti-racism pedagogies and establishing antiracist learning environments.

Associate professor Lisa de Saxe Zerden, Ph.D. alumna Brianna Lombardi, Ph.D. student Ting Guan and Ph.D. alumnus Shiyou Wu recently co-authored the article, "Social work workforce development and Medicaid expansion: Mapping areas of (mis)alignment," which was published in Social Work Research.

In the news
Professor Sheryl Zimmerman discussed the impact of restricting visitors in nursing homes during the pandemic in the New York Times editorial, "Nursing home patients are dying of loneliness," and was quoted in the North Carolina Health News article, "Family health workers feel left behind by NC's vaccination rollout."

Clinical associate professor Laurie Selz-Campbell was featured in a "Carolina People" profile in The Well, UNC's hub for employees.

Recent alumni updates
Nora Spencer, MSW '17, and the nonprofit she founded, Hope Renovations, were recently featured on CBS This Morning.

Tanya Smith Brice, Ph.D. '03, recently accepted a new role as vice president of education for the Council on Social Work Education.

Charles E. Carter Jr., MSW '90, was appointed to the board of trustees for the Boston-area Foundation for MetroWest. After earning his MSW, Carter completed his Ph.D. at Boston College, served as chief strategy officer for Harvard University's Center on the Developing Child and now serves as senior evidence director for Project Evident.

Scott Janssen, MSW '93, who works as a hospice social worker, recently wrote an article for The Washington Post on death and the love that connects us.  

Bridget Mahoney, MSW '07, recently accepted a new role as a social worker for the VA Outreach Clinic in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands.

Gary B. Bailey, MSW ’84, completed his Ph.D. dissertation in Leadership Studies at North Carolina A&T University in December.

Don Watson, MSW '66, of Tarboro, N.C., died on Dec 16, 2020. Before retiring, Watson worked for the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, where he advocated for underserved women and children.

Karen McCoy, MSW '77, died on Dec. 29, 2020. McCoy’s career included nearly 20 years serving Native American veterans through her work with the Veterans Administration.

Janice Gross Wells, MSW '69, died on Dec. 30, 2020. Wells served as director of the MSW program at NCSU.

The work of the late MaryAnn Black, MSW '70, was recently featured in a documentary produced by WRAL-TV. Black, who died on March 26, 2020, served in the N.C. House of Representatives and as a social worker.
