Welcome to the first volume of Ash Studios new monthly newsletter.
Many of you have indicated that you would like to keep up with us, but prefer email - so this one is for you. We had a busy summer, the highlight of which was winning Best Gallery or Art Space from both D Magazine and D Home! This award belongs to the hundreds, if not thousands, of artists, creatives, supporters, and patrons who have supported Ash Studios since we started in 2012. Thank you, truly, for your continued belief and support. Ash does not exist without you!
Monuments and Rituals
We kicked off our fall season with Monuments & Rituals | Mercado & Open Studio, a project initiated by Fred Villanueva and supported by the Office of Cultural Affairs, City of Dallas, Cultural Vitality Program Grant (Congrats Fred on the win!). This project involved an artist vendor market led by Tamitha Curiel, and three performances in an site specific earth work created by Fred Villanueva. The performances were captured beautifully by Christian Vasquez and we encourage you to watch them here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nW_Tqza1G70
Girls Inc
Also in September, Ash Studios partnered with Girls Inc, South Dallas branch and worked with twenty young women to create two 5 x 25 ft paintings! Our team had a blast teaching the girls how to be free with paint over a two day workshop. We look forward to more collaborations with Girls Inc!
City of Dallas Cultural Artist Program
Finally, Fred closed September strong by being admitted to the artist roster of the City of Dallas Cultural Artist Program. The CAP lets nonprofits, churches, schools, etc request cultural workshops/residencies at their facilities and the City then pays artists to fulfill the request. Ash Studios is available for both a media lab workshop and a mural painting workshop.Learn more and request us today!
New Faces
Ash Studios is constantly changing and we are so excited to welcome Bry Jones, and Alena Maryasova to our team as studio assistants. They join Janet Quintero on our studio assistant team. We also wish our summer studio assistants, Sierra Sanchez, Lesly Garcia and Juan Cruz, a great semester at Rhode Island School of Design and Texas Tech respectively.
Speaking of Janet, we had a blast celebrating her birthday at the studio. Also celebrating a birthday is our Sculpture Co-op leader, Scott Shubin. If you go to the State Fair of Texas, make sure you check out Scott’s sculpture made right here at Ash!
Ash Studios Joins Common Field
We are excited to announce that Ash Studios is now a member of Common Field, a visual arts organizing network connecting contemporary, experimental, noncommercial artist spaces and projects across the U.S. and beyond. Darryl Ratcliff will be presenting with Art F City senior editor, Michael Farley, on “Critical Programs, “Critical Ideas” at the national Common Field convening in Miami, Florida Oct 20-23rd.
