The above still is from the short film afro-woman: 2016 CE by filmmaker Shatara Michelle Ford which stars former child actress, Zelda Harris best known as Troy in Spike Lee's CROOKLYN. Keep an eye out for the filmmaker's first feature film called queen elizabeth which "follows an irreverent 24 year old suffering from some serious Millennial malaise." She'll be shooting the film this fall with some shorter film projects coming in the meantime.

Name: Shatara Michelle Ford    ::    Occupation: Filmmaker & Social Entrepreneur    ::    City: Los Angeles     ::    Astrological sign: Gemini

To cope with a long commute: James Brown, Miles Davis, Stromae

Currently reading: Haruki Murakami's The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

Most important failure: Getting rejected from my dream PhD program... because, now, 5 years later, I'm pretty sure I'd be miserable, and not creating.

Recurring dream: That my father is abducted by aliens in a grocery store.

The future/What's next:I'm shooting a music video that is a black feminist reimagining of Hitchcock's VERTIGO, which I'm loving every minute of. After that I'm working a short film about mermaids and my debut feature shoots in the Fall. It's a really exciting time of just head-down hardcore creating. Naturally, as a Gemini I have another life building a social enterprise venture focused on ownership of land and property for historically non-white communities. Our goal is to go into cities on the cusp of gentrification and buy up space to develop on with an eye to improving the quality of sustainable affordable housing, access to healthy food and availability of cheap commercial property for the actual inhabitants of those communities... therefore reinvigorating neighborhoods for social good, not commercial gain and displacement.

Ladies who we should know: I've got music on the brain, so I would like to highlight Nerdcore rapper, SAMMUS, and Neo-Disco queen, Gavin Turek. Also, the gritty visual poetry and photography of Joss Barton.
