Above is performance documentation of 24 flower bouquets, the cost of admission to Carolyn Lazard's 2016 piece entitled Support System (after Park, Tina, and Bob). Lazard's work ranges from performance to video to written word, and often tackles notions of health, disability and care across mediums. She is also a part of the collective Canaries, who were artists in residence at Recess in late 2016.

Name: Carolyn Lazard   //   Occupation: Artist and writer   //   Age: 29   //   City: Philadelphia   //   Astrological sign: Cancer sun, Cancer ascendant, Scorpio moon.

To cope with a long commute: I listen to Gamelan music. It immediately diffuses any latent road rage I may be harboring.

Most important failure: Not being able to keep up at my museum job which led to becoming an artist and writer full-time :)

Why you love your city: Philly is very black, the people are kind, and the artists here create their own communities away from the trends and fads of the larger art world.

Reoccurring dream: The KGB is chasing me and every time I think I've outsmarted them, they end up finding me.

Worst thing you ever made: In high school, my friends and I made a really trashy adaptation of The O.C. My high school art teacher said it was "the worst thing he'd ever seen" and he was right but it was soooo much fun.

The future: It's been difficult to project myself into the future with the current political climate. But every time I do, it feels like an act of defiance.

What's next: I'm developing a video installation about an underground fire that's been burning in an abandoned coal mining town for over 40 years.

Ladies who we should know: Salty is a scrappy punk band that makes songs about patriarchy and white supremacy. Naima Green is a brilliant photographer who makes intimate images that address representations of race and the landscape. Vilissa Thompson is a fierce racial justice and disability justice advocate.
