Buy your tickets for ‘Eye on type’, Tuesday 14 September

Our next Type Tuesday, Eye on type, will take place next week at 6:30pm (BST) on 14 September 2021, with some great designers who will be featured in the forthcoming Type special issue (Eye 102 volume 26). Our guests are November from Mumbai, Laura Meseguer from Barcelona and Thomas Huot-Marchand from Nancy. Tickets cost £5/£3. 

Thomas Huot-Marchand (above) is an influential type designer, graphic designer, author, researcher and teacher whose best known typefaces include Minuscule, Minérale (below) and Garaje, which are distributed by the Lyon-based foundry, 205TF. He is the director of the Atelier National de Recherche Typographique (ANRT) in Nancy, France. Huot-Marchand’s projects include work with the Be-poles agency, for whom he designs custom typefaces such as the typefaces for the Park MGM hotel in Las Vegas and the Paris department store La Samaritaine, just reopened after sixteen years of restoration work.

November is the Mumbai practice founded by Juhi Vishnani (above left) and Shiva Nallerperumal (right), designers who are both intellectually driven and commercially astute. Type is at the heart of what they do, and their versatile studio works across many different languages and scripts. Their portfolio spans editorial design, branding and identity, logotypes (Domino’s), illustration, motion graphics, music (Apple), typeface design (including Oli Grotesk) and political activism, and they have lent their design skills to many social causes (such as Artists Unite, see logotype below, and the anti-caste movement) during these challenging times.

Barcelona-based Laura Meseguer (above), the daughter and grandchild of printshop owners, is a type designer, lettering artist, educator and author. Her many original typefaces include Rumba, Frankie, Lalola and Sisters (below), and she has designed custom fonts for a wide range of clients. She is co-author of the book Cómo crear tipografías. Del boceto a la pantalla (How to create typefaces. From sketch to screen) first published in Spanish and now translated into Polish, Portuguese, English and Chinese. Her solo exhibition ‘The Beautiful People’ was held in Barcelona last year, and her new typeface, Ella, will be available in 2022.

Our latest blog post is Gabriela Matuszyk’s ‘Year of the pictograms’ (see above), a review of the exhibition ‘Tokyo 1964: Designing Tomorrow’ co-curated by Yamashita Megumi and David Phillips. ‘Tokyo 1964’, at Japan House in London, demonstrates the lasting influence of that year’s games on design for the Olympics, with innovations such as pictograms, great posters and the first use of the tern ‘Paralympics’. Another blog favourite is Nick Bell’s ‘Saturday afternoon fever’, about Erik Kessels’ photobook of vintage football players caught in mid-air.
