Eye newsletter

Dear friends,

As I write this, my colleague Simon Esterson is on press with the next issue of Eye magazine, packed full of great stories from the worlds of graphic design and visual culture.

Eye 103 is an ‘unthemed’ edition, but there are a few common threads that run through it, including editorial design and reportage; the craft of photography; and the importance of questioning design history and received opinion.

We have really enjoyed working with all the contributors to Eye 103, and we want as many readers to buy and enjoy this issue as possible. As a completely independent magazine, we rely upon issue sales, advertising and subscriptions to keep going, so please do spread the word as far and wide as possible.

As an incentive, we have a special offer for anyone starting their subscription with the latest issue – Eye Extra 01, an interview with Richard Turley.

The Eye Events page is full of details of things to see and do, including ‘Momentum of Light’ in London, images captured by photographer Iwan Baan during his travels with Burkinabè architect Francis Kéré through Burkina Faso; an exhibition about Anni and Josef Albers in Valencia; and ‘What Design Can Do’, a one-day conference in Amsterdam on 3 June.

Birmingham Design Festival, from 9-11 June, includes Morag Myerscough (see Eye 79), Dines (see Eye 100), Jim Sutherland (see Eye 101), Richard Turley (see our special offer) and Eye art editor Holly Catford, talking about Pit, the magazine she co-founded, whose latest issue is a magnificent ‘Potato Special’ with three different covers (see ‘Polly’, above).

Holly will be giving a different talk, ‘Team work makes the dream work’, at St Bride Library on Thursday 16 June.
For more essential graphic design events, please browse the Eye Events page. And if you are organising a conference or show that you think will interest Eye readers, please contact my colleague Gabriela.

Eye’s next Type Tuesday at St Bride, a books special, will be on 7 June – check out Eye’s social media for details.

The Eye website is full of articles from both blog and the printed magazine, for example Elizabeth Glickfeld’s Eye 92 Reputations interview with Australian designer Stuart Geddes (above); Holly Harris’s photography post ‘When Harry shot Cliff’; and Karrie Jacobs’ interview with Barbara Kruger in Eye 05 (below) in 1991.

Our latest blog post is ‘Serious joy’, a review by Gabriela Matuszyk of the new Camille Walala monograph published by Counter-Print (see the book’s eight different covers, above). And you may enjoy re-visiting ‘Kind of Blued’ (see below), Marian Bantjes’s post about Sameer Kulavoor.

Eye is on press, and will shortly be bound and boxed ready for dispatch. If you do already subscribe, thank you – you are already someone who makes it possible for us to keep publishing.

If you don’t yet subscribe, Eye 103 – with features about Garry Fabian Miller, Tomo Tomo, Lucinda Rogers, the Black Outdoor Art project, Harry Willock and a wide-ranging review section – is a great place to start.

And if you’re not yet an Eye subscriber, please support us by clicking here, or calling the Eye shop at +44 137 185 1885, and taking advantage of our new special offer – a free copy of Richard Turley: Eye Extra 01.

Best wishes from everyone at Eye
John L. Walters, editor
